Deploying energy-efficient deep neural networks on energy-constrained edge devices is an important research topic in both machine learning and circuit design communities. Both artificial neural networks (ANNs) and spiking neural networks (SNNs) have been p ...

Neurons in the human amygdala and hippocampus are classically thought to encode a person’s identity invariant to visual features. However, it remains largely unknown how visual information from higher visual cortical areas is translated into such a semanti ...

This paper investigates the fundamental regression task of learning k neurons (a.k.a. teachers) from Gaussian input, using two-layer ReLU neural networks with width m (a.k.a. students) and m, k = O(1), trained via gradient descent under proper initializati ...

Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) are detectors capable of capturing single photons and of performing photon counting. SPADs have an exceptional temporal resolution and are thus highly suitable for time-resolved imaging applications. Applications span ...

In this paper, we study sampling from a posterior derived from a neural network. We propose a new probabilistic model consisting of adding noise at every pre- and post-activation in the network, arguing that the resulting posterior can be sampled using an ...

Humans and animals constantly adapt to their environment over the course of their life. This thesis seeks to integrate various timescales of adaptation, ranging from the adaptation of synaptic connections between spiking neurons (milliseconds), rapid behav ...

With the prevalence of smartphones, watches, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the ability to track their positions is becoming increasingly important. For many indoor positioning systems (IPSs), providing an uninterrupted flow of information in real-t ...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been a valuable tool in investigating the pathological cascade of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its progression, which are still open questions. Although some MRI-derived hallmarks in terms of functional connectivity and ...

Developing energy-saving neural network models is a topic of rapidly increasing interest in the artificial intelligence community. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are biologically inspired models that strive to leverage the energy efficiency stemming from a ...

For solving tasks such as recognizing a song, answering a question, or inverting a sequence of symbols, cortical microcircuits need to integrate and manipulate information that was dispersed over time during the preceding seconds. Creating biologically rea ...

The way our brain learns to disentangle complex signals into unambiguous concepts is fascinating but remains largely unknown. There is evidence, however, that hierarchical neural representations play a key role in the cortex. This thesis investigates biolo ...

The macroscopic dynamics of large populations of neurons can be mathematically analyzed using low-dimensional firing-rate or neural-mass models. However, these models fail to capture spike synchronization effects and nonstationary responses of the populati ...

One of the paramount challenges in neuroscience is to understand the dynamics of individual neurons and how they give rise to network dynamics when interconnected. Historically, researchers have resorted to graph theory, statistics, and statistical mechani ...

The actionable space surrounding the body, referred to as peripersonal space (PPS), has been the subject of significant interest of late within the broader framework of embodied cognition. Neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies have shown the represen ...

Neural population equations such as neural mass or field models are widely used to study brain activity on a large scale. However, the relation of these models to the properties of single neurons is unclear. Here we derive an equation for several interacti ...

Reconsolidation of memories has mostly been studied at the behavioral and molecular level. Here, we put forward a simple extension of existing computational models of synaptic consolidation to capture hippocampal slice experiments that have been interprete ...

The ability to learn and perform statistical inference with biologically plausible recurrent networks of spiking neurons is an important step toward understanding perception and reasoning. Here we derive and investigate a new learning rule for recurrent sp ...

An important feature of the nervous system is its ability to adapt to new stimuli. This adaptation allows for optimal encoding of the incoming information by dynamically changing the coding strategy based upon the incoming inputs to the neuron. At the leve ...

How do animals learn to repeat behaviors that lead to the obtention of food or other “rewarding” objects? As a biologically plausible paradigm for learning in spiking neural networks, spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) has been shown to perform well ...
