Coastal cities are facing a rise in groundwater levels induced by sea level rise, further triggering saturation excess flooding where groundwater levels reach the topographic surface or reduce the storage capacity of the soil, thus stressing the existing i ...

Hydrogen hydrates are among the basic constituents of our solar system's outer planets, some of their moons, as well Neptune-like exo-planets. The details of their high-pressure phases and their thermodynamic conditions of formation and stability are funda ...

The Caldes de Boi geothermal waters show important differences in pH (6.5-9.6) and temperature (15.9 degrees C-52 degrees C) despite they have a common origin and a very simple circuit at depth (4km below the recharge area level). These differences are the ...

The sensitivity of future groundwater recharge and temperature development was investigated for three alluvial aquifers in the urban agglomeration of the city of Basel, Switzerland. For selected climate projections groundwater recharge and the associated t ...

A seepage face is a nonlinear dynamic boundary that strongly affects pressure head distributions, water table fluctuations, and flow patterns. Its handling in hydrological models, especially under complex conditions such as heterogeneity and coupled surfac ...

This work deals with the characterization of the spatial and temporal variability of water exchange fluxes from/to the Brenta river streambed (Veneto, Italy), critically important to regional water resources management. The aquifer system is structurally q ...

The calculation of the impact pressure on obstacles in granular flows is a fundamental issue of practical relevance, e.g. for snow avalanches impacting obstacles. Previous research shows that the load on the obstacle builds up, due to the formation of forc ...

In hydrogeology, it is often difficult to fully understand the hydraulic factors affecting the recharge of groundwater systems. Particularly, at a regional scale, the groundwater system can have different drivers depending on the considered area, i.e., soi ...

Alpine hydrology is particularly challenging due to the complexity of mountainous terrain and the spatial and temporal variability of meteorological parameters such as precipitation, temperature and evaporation. Yet improving our understanding of hydrologi ...

A numerical study, based on a density-dependent variably saturated groundwater flow model, was conducted to investigate flow and salt transport in a near-shore aquifer under intensified wave conditions caused by offshore storms. Temporally varying onshore ...

Based on a literature overview, this paper summarizes the impact and legacy of the contributions of Wilfried Brutsaert and Jean-Yves Parlange (Cornell University) with respect to the current state-of-the-art understanding in hydraulic groundwater theory. F ...

The infiltration of a non-wetting liquid, such as molten metal, into a porous solid, such as a ceramic preform, is influenced by the wetting angle of the liquid on the solid. The link between local wetting and the minimum pressure required for initiation o ...

As in all semi-arid regions, Tambarga, a small village surrounded by national parks in the landlocked country of Burkina Faso, is affected by the seasonality of the local hydrology. Seasonal and spatial variability of rainfall shapes the livelihoods of rur ...

Climate change will have both quantitative and qualitative effects on groundwater resources. These impacts differ for aquifers in solid and unconsolidated rock, in urban or rural locations, and in the principal processes of groundwater recharge. Having kno ...

The out-of-plane permeability of two glass fibre fabrics was measured by 26 institutions using silicone oil as a test fluid. Participants in this study were free to select the test procedure, specimen dimensions and data analysis method, provided that test ...

Reductive bioremediation is currently being explored as a possible strategy for uranium-contaminated aquifers such as the Old Rifle site (Colorado). The stability of U(IV) phases under oxidizing conditions is key to the performance of this procedure. An in ...

This thesis is about the simulation of flow, transport and geochemical reactions in variably saturated soils. Motivated by the problematic disposal and revegetation of residue from aluminium refining, novel modelling tools for general geochemical reactions ...

Coastal aquifers provide an important hydrologic connection between terrestrial freshwater and oceanic seawater. Understanding the water flow and salinity distributions in those aquifers is essential to manage seawater intrusion and regional groundwater re ...

Significant progress has been made these last decades in the development of hydrogeological numerical flow modelling for describing the hydrodynamic behaviour of landslides. However, these new sophisticated methods are still very seldom used in the problem ...

We present dynamic measurement of drainage curves in two systems having relevance to metal matrix composite processing, namely SiC/Al and SiC/Al-12.2at%Si. Data show that liquid/solid chemical reactions that cause a lowering of the contact angle do indeed ...
