Reinforced concrete flat slabs consist of a continuous, thin concrete plate that rests on a grid of columns. The supporting surface of the columns is very small compared to the floor plan dimensions, leading to concentrations of shear forces near the colum ...

Under service conditions, R-UHPFRC (Reinforced Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious composite) beams exhibit residual deflection after loading-unloading. This is due to the tensile strain hardening behavior of UHPFRC. The precise calculatio ...

In the present work, palm wood was pretreated using hydrothermal technique in conjunction with chemical method for removal of lignin. Pretreated palm wood was subjected to hydrolysis using Trichoderma reesei MTCC 4876. Subsequently bioethanol was produced ...

The construction industry has recently increased the adoption of additive manufacturing (AM, also known as 3D-printing) technologies. This review paper presents the state of the art of ground-based AM systems in construction, focusing comprehensively on de ...

Current experimental studies on the seismic behavior of steel wide-flange columns under multi-axis cyclic loading reveal that these members, depending on their geometric characteristics, may be susceptible to axial shortening, out-of-plane deformations and ...

What-if analysis is a data-intensive exploration to inspect how changes in a set of input parameters of a model influence some outcomes. It is motivated by a user trying to understand the sensitivity of a model to a certain parameter in order to reach a se ...

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Equivalent Circuit Models (ECMs) are widely used to characterize the impedance and estimate parameters of electrochemical systems such as batteries. We use a generic ECM with ten parameters grouped to model ...

The tensile deformation of top-down cracks significantly influences pavement delamination. Accurately formulating the stress intensity factor (SIF) is crucial for assessing the stress/strain near crack tips. In the present study, a robust data mining metho ...

Seismic assessment of unreinforced masonry structures remains a challenge. This dissertation investigates the in-plane behavior of historical masonry elements and proposes an advanced simulation method based on the cohesive zone model (CZM) in a finite ele ...

We analyze dynamic trading by an activist investor who can expend costly effort to affect firm value. We obtain the equilibrium in closed form for a general activism technology, including both binary and continuous outcomes. Variation in parameters can pro ...

Biomimetic behavior includes aspects such as learning from previous experience, self-diagnosis, and adaptation. This thesis describes control methodologies that are essential to development towards biomimetic behavior of a complex deployable structure. Sim ...

At part load operation, Francis turbines experience the development of a cavitation vortex rope in the draft tube, whose precession acts as a pressure excitation source. In case of resonance, the resulting pressure pulsations lead to unacceptable torque an ...

The estimation of the apparent axon diameter (AAD) via diffusion MRI is affected by the incoherent alignment of single axons around its axon bundle direction, also known as orientational dispersion. The simultaneous estimation of AAD and dispersion is chal ...

The effect of cyclic loading interruption on the fatigue behavior of angle-ply (±45)2S glass/epoxy composite laminates was investigated by comparing the obtained results of continuous- and interrupted loading patterns. Continuous fatigue experiments were p ...

This paper presents the findings of parametric finite-element (FE) simulations of more than 50 wide-flange steel columns under cyclic loading. The column sizes, which are mostly highly ductile according to the current design practice in North America, are ...
