Accessing input data is a critical operation in data analytics: i) slow data access significantly degrades performance, and ii) storing everything in the fastest medium, i.e., memory, incurs high operational and hardware costs. Further, while GPUs offer in ...

In recent years, population aging and the consequent higher incidence of noncommunicable diseases, have increased the need for long-term health monitoring. Moreover, as healthcare cost is projected to grow substantially by 2030 in OECD countries, the deman ...

Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) is an emerging type of memory device that provides fast, byte-addressable, and high-capacity durable storage. NVM sits on the memory bus and allows durable data structures designs similar to the in-memory equivalent ones. Expensiv ...

The field of genomics is likely to become the largest producer of data as a consequence of the large-scale application of next-generation sequencing technology for biological research and personalized medical treatments. The raw sequence data produced by t ...

A new generation of manycore processors is on the rise that offers dozens and more cores on a chip and, in a sense, fuses host processor and accelerator. In this paper we target the efficient training of generalized linear models on these machines. We prop ...

Current cluster computing frameworks suffer from load imbalance and limited parallelism due to skewed data distributions, processing times, and machine speeds. We observe that the underlying cause for these issues in current systems is that they partition ...

Transaction processing is a mission critical enterprise application that runs on high-end servers. Traditionally, transaction processing systems have been designed for uniform core-to-core communication latencies. In the past decade, with the emergence of ...

Instruction set extensions (ISEs) improve the performance and energy consumption of application-specific processors. ISEs can use architecturally visible storage (AVS), localized compiler-controlled memories, to provide higher I/O bandwidth than reading da ...

This paper focuses on the design of an asynchronous broadcast primitive on the Intel SCC. Our solution is based on OC-Bcast, a state-of-the-art k-ary tree synchronous broadcast algorithm that leverages the parallelism provided by on-chip Remote Memory Acce ...

One of the key trends in computing over the past two decades has been increased distribution, both at the processor level, where multi-core architectures are now the norm, and at the system level, where many key services are currently distributed overmulti ...

The recent proliferation of multi-core processors has moved concurrent programming into mainstream by forcing increasingly more programmers to write parallel code. Using traditional concurrency techniques, such as locking, is notoriously difficult and has ...

The multicore revolution and the ever-increasing complexity of computing systems is dramatically changing system design, analysis and programming of computing platforms. Future architectures will feature hundreds to thousands of simple processors and on-ch ...

This paper advocates the placement of Architecturally Visible Communication (AVC) buffers between adjacent cores in MPSoCs to provide high-throughput communication for streaming applications. Producer/consumer relationships map poorly onto cache-based MPSo ...

L1 instruction-cache misses pose a critical performance bottleneck in commercial server workloads. Cache access latency constraints preclude L1 instruction caches large enough to capture the application, library, and OS instruction working sets of these wo ...

With the growing complexity in consumer embedded products and the improvements in process technology, Multi-Processor System-On-Chip (MPSoC) architectures have become widespread. These new systems are very complex to design as they must execute multiple co ...
