Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and field-theory arguments, we study the fully frustrated transversefield Ising model on the square lattice for the purpose of quantitatively relating two different order parameters to each other. We consider a "primar ...

Human babies have a natural desire to interact with new toys and objects, through which they learn how the world around them works, e.g., that glass shatters when dropped, but a rubber ball does not. When their predictions are proven incorrect, such as whe ...

We consider correlators for the flux of energy and charge in the background of operators with large global U(1) charge in conformal field theory (CFT). It has recently been shown that the corresponding Euclidean correlators generically admit a semiclassica ...

We face a rigidity problem for the fractional p-Laplace operator to extend to this new framework some tools useful for the linear case. It is known that (-Delta)(s)(1 - vertical bar x vertical bar(2))(+)(s) and -Delta(p)(1 - vertical bar x vertical bar(p/p ...

By operating with the Scale Relativity Theory in the dynamics of complex systems, we can achieve a description of these complex systems through a holographic-type perspective. Then, gauge invariances of a Riccati-type become functional in complex system dy ...

Is it possible to detect if the sample paths of a stochastic process almost surely admit a finite expansion with respect to some/any basis? The determination is to be made on the basis of a finite collection of discretely/noisily observed sample paths. We ...

Recently, we have established and used the generalized Littlewood theorem concerning contour integrals of the logarithm of analytical function to obtain new criteria equivalent to the Riemann hypothesis. Later, the same theorem was applied to calculate cer ...

This work is concerned with computing low-rank approximations of a matrix function f(A) for a large symmetric positive semidefinite matrix A, a task that arises in, e.g., statistical learning and inverse problems. The application of popular randomized meth ...

The Schur decomposition of a square matrix A is an important intermediate step of state-of-the-art numerical algorithms for addressing eigenvalue problems, matrix functions, and matrix equations. This work is concerned with the following task: Compute a (m ...

The eigenspectrum of the Koopman operator enables the decomposition of nonlinear dynamics into a sum of nonlinear functions of the state space with purely exponential and sinusoidal time dependence. For a limited number of dynamical systems, it is possible ...

Fourier ptychography (FP) involves the acquisition of several low-resolution intensity images of a sample under varying illumination angles. They are then combined into a high-resolution complex-valued image by solving a phase-retrieval problem. The object ...

Social media studies often collect data retrospectively to analyze public opinion. Social media data may decay over time and such decay may prevent the collection of the complete dataset. As a result, the collected dataset may differ from the complete data ...

Population equations for infinitely large networks of spiking neurons have a long tradition in theoret-ical neuroscience. In this work, we analyze a recent generalization of these equations to populations of finite size, which takes the form of a nonlinear ...

Aerosol transmission remains a major challenge for the control of respiratory viruses. To date, prevention strategies include masks, vaccinations, physical distancing, travel restrictions, and lockdowns. Such measures are effective but come with heavy soci ...

By the end of the 19th century, an international order had emerged for patents, allowing business actors to use patents in many countries concurrently, and thus supporting a new phase in the development of industrial capitalism. Centered on Europe in spite ...

We describe the first gradient methods on Riemannian manifolds to achieve accelerated rates in the non-convex case. Under Lipschitz assumptions on the Riemannian gradient and Hessian of the cost function, these methods find approximate first-order critical ...

In recent years, the conjecture on the instability of Anti-de Sitter spacetime, put forward by Dafermos-Holzegel (Dynamic instability of solitons in 4 + 1 dimesnional gravity with negative cosmological constant, 2006. https://www.dpmms.cam.ac.uk/similar to ...

Since the birth of Information Theory, researchers have defined and exploited various information measures, as well as endowed them with operational meanings. Some were born as a "solution to a problem", like Shannon's Entropy and Mutual Information. Other ...
