The development of new industrial applications has diverted the focus of research towards compacter and faster rotatory drives. These requirements push the classical ball-bearings of electric motors to the limits in terms of operational lifetime and fricti ...

Magnetically-levitated drives are compelling in applications where the long-lifetime operation or process chamber encapsulation is a requirement. To exploit these advantages, contactless position sensors are needed to estimate the position of the rotor. Of ...

The nonlinear behavior of a rigid rotor supported by herringbone grooved journal gas bearings (HGJBs) was investigated in this study. The two-dimensional narrow groove theory (2D-NGT) was adopted to model the HGJBs. A set of integrated rotor-bearing state ...

Magnetically-levitated drives are compelling in applications where long-lifetime operation or process chamber encapsulation is a requirement. To exploit these advantages, contactless position sensors are needed for position information of the rotor. Off-th ...

The eyeWatch(TM) is a new glaucoma drainage device that includes an adjustable mechanism that can vary the resistance to aqueous humor outflow during the postoperative period to reduce the burden of postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) management. The ...

This research work has been triggered by an industrial project aimed at modelling and manufacturing a small-scale very high speed motor. Very high speed electrical motors offer the main advantage of reducing the size of a system. Indeed, at constant output ...

Two complementary measurement systems – built upon an autonomous floating craft and a tethered balloon – for lake research and monitoring are presented. The autonomous vehicle was assembled on a catamaran for stability, and is capable of handling a variety ...

To meet the electrical grid's demand on pump power variation, GE Renewable Energy develops since 10 years variable speed machines (also called Doubly Fed Induction Generators or DFIG). Within turbogenerators, the phenomenon of circulating currents in Roebe ...

Externally pressurized gas journal bearings (EPGJB) are widely adopted to support high speed rotors. This paper presents novel experimental benchmark test data which enables EPGJB model validation. Axial and circumferential pressure profile measurements ar ...

A method for contactlessly determining an exact passage of an athlete at points placed along a track in sports, wherein the method comprises gearing the athlete with a wearable magnetometer sensor unit, whereby the magnetometer sensor unit is equipped with ...

This article presents the first closed-loop magnetic bearing and angular velocity experimental results of a reaction sphere actuator for satellite attitude control. The proposed reaction sphere is a permanent magnet spherical actuator whose rotor is suppor ...

A magnetic angle sensor is a matched combination of a permanent magnet, affixed to a rotating shaft, and a magnetic field sensor. The magnet part of the angle sensors is configured so as to create either a magnetic field with an angle-dependent component p ...

We study a new image sensor that is reminiscent of traditional photographic film. Each pixel in the sensor has a binary response, giving only a one-bit quantized measurement of the local light intensity. To analyze its performance, we formulate the oversam ...

The trends in the design of image sensors are to build sensors with low noise, high sensitivity, high dynamic range, and small pixel size. How can we benefit from pixels with small size and high sensitivity? In this dissertation, we study a new image senso ...

Hall-effect devices make up by far the largest part of all magnetic sensors on the market today. The main reason is compatibility of Hall devices with modern semiconductor technology. In particular, integrated Hall sensor micro-systems fabricated in low-co ...

The development of very high-speed motors has evolved fascinatingly in the last few years. Due to their speed, their low weight and their high power density, the need for such motors has recently increased for various different applications. Among them, su ...

For the simulation of electrical power systems (adjustable speed drives, wind farms, complete grids, etc.) the Kirchhoff's model is used. Each of the components of this model (transmission line, circuit breaker, electrical machines, etc.) is represented by ...

This dissertation considers mechatronic systems driven by piezoelectric ultrasonic motors (PUM). The focus is set on optimal system design and sensorless position control. Mechatronic industry faces the challenge to deliver ever more efficient and reliable ...

This paper addresses the design of a new hybrid MEMS micromotor. It is a small 3-phases axial flux BLDC motor. The stator is realized following the almost CMOS technology rules used for MEMS manufacture and the coils have two copper layers. The rotor is ma ...

We present an optimization design of a slotless permanent-magnet brushless dc motor (400 W, 6000 rpm), with two-segment Halbach arrays. The optimization is based on a motor analytical model which is obtained by solving the magnetic scalar potential using t ...
