Human babies have a natural desire to interact with new toys and objects, through which they learn how the world around them works, e.g., that glass shatters when dropped, but a rubber ball does not. When their predictions are proven incorrect, such as whe ...

We face a rigidity problem for the fractional p-Laplace operator to extend to this new framework some tools useful for the linear case. It is known that (-Delta)(s)(1 - vertical bar x vertical bar(2))(+)(s) and -Delta(p)(1 - vertical bar x vertical bar(p/p ...

By operating with the Scale Relativity Theory in the dynamics of complex systems, we can achieve a description of these complex systems through a holographic-type perspective. Then, gauge invariances of a Riccati-type become functional in complex system dy ...

Animal locomotion is the result of complex and multi-layered interactions between the nervous system, the musculo-skeletal system and the environment. Decoding the underlying mechanisms requires an integrative approach. Comparative experimental biology has ...

Is it possible to detect if the sample paths of a stochastic process almost surely admit a finite expansion with respect to some/any basis? The determination is to be made on the basis of a finite collection of discretely/noisily observed sample paths. We ...

Daily manipulation tasks are characterized by regular features associated with the task structure, which can be described by multiple geometric primitives related to actions and object shapes. Only using Cartesian coordinate systems cannot fully represent ...

For people with limited mobility, navigating in cluttered indoor environment is challenging. In this work, we propose a mobile assistive furniture suite that is designed to ease the life of people with special needs in indoor movement. To enable intelligen ...

The Schur decomposition of a square matrix A is an important intermediate step of state-of-the-art numerical algorithms for addressing eigenvalue problems, matrix functions, and matrix equations. This work is concerned with the following task: Compute a (m ...

This work is concerned with computing low-rank approximations of a matrix function f(A) for a large symmetric positive semidefinite matrix A, a task that arises in, e.g., statistical learning and inverse problems. The application of popular randomized meth ...

Recently, we have established and used the generalized Littlewood theorem concerning contour integrals of the logarithm of analytical function to obtain new criteria equivalent to the Riemann hypothesis. Later, the same theorem was applied to calculate cer ...

Fourier ptychography (FP) involves the acquisition of several low-resolution intensity images of a sample under varying illumination angles. They are then combined into a high-resolution complex-valued image by solving a phase-retrieval problem. The object ...

Label-free biosensors, combined with miniaturized micro-electromechanical sensory platforms, offer an attractive solution for real-time and facile monitoring of biomolecules due to their high sensitivity and selectivity without the need for specifically la ...

The eigenspectrum of the Koopman operator enables the decomposition of nonlinear dynamics into a sum of nonlinear functions of the state space with purely exponential and sinusoidal time dependence. For a limited number of dynamical systems, it is possible ...

A closed-loop servo control based on balancing the gain of two probing frequencies is proposed for real-time Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) without post-processing. With the most basic BOTDA hardware setup, the system can perform measuremen ...

We describe the first gradient methods on Riemannian manifolds to achieve accelerated rates in the non-convex case. Under Lipschitz assumptions on the Riemannian gradient and Hessian of the cost function, these methods find approximate first-order critical ...

In recent years, the conjecture on the instability of Anti-de Sitter spacetime, put forward by Dafermos-Holzegel (Dynamic instability of solitons in 4 + 1 dimesnional gravity with negative cosmological constant, 2006. https://www.dpmms.cam.ac.uk/similar to ...

In this article, we propose an approach to extract variable-impedance during cutting tasks from human demonstrations, so as to ease soft-tissue cutting by robots. We model the dynamic adjustment of the human arm during interactions with the tissue and tran ...

The acidity of aqueous atmospheric solutions is a key parameter driving both the partitioning of semi-volatile acidic and basic trace gases and their aqueous-phase chemistry. In addition, the acidity of atmospheric aqueous phases, e.g., deliquesced aerosol ...

The paper presents an improved slow-speed mass balancing procedure capable of reducing high-speed related imbalance. Parametric excitation is used to project the small imbalance forces onto a chosen mode of vibration, corresponding to a high critical rotat ...

This letter presents closed-loop position control of a pneumatically actuated modular robotic platform "pneumagami" that can be stacked to enlarge work and design space for wearable applications. The module is a 3 degrees of freedom (DoF) parallel robot wi ...
