Sign Language conveys information through multiple channels composed of manual (handshape, hand movement) and non-manual (facial expression, mouthing, body posture) components. Sign language assessment involves giving granular feedback to a learner, in ter ...

The Hsp70 cycle is a key element of protein homeostasis, which is essential to avoid protein aggregation and protein-related diseases. Despite many experimental observations of the interaction between Hsp70, its co-chaperone DnaJ and various substrates, li ...

Significant damages caused by lightning can be avoided by predicting lightning and taking precautionary measures. Here, a machine learning model is developed to nowcast lightning flashes using dew point temperature, precipitation, wind speed, wind directio ...

Satellite remote sensing has become a key technology for monitoring Earth and the processes occurring at its surface. It relies on state-of-the-art machine learning models that require large annotated datasets to capture the extreme diversity of the proble ...

Learning-based outlier (mismatched correspondence) rejection for robust 3D registration generally formulates the outlier removal as an inlier/outlier classification problem. The core for this to be successful is to learn the discriminative inlier/outlier f ...

Rigid body interactions are fundamental to numerous scientific disciplines, but remain challenging to simulate due to their abrupt nonlinear nature and sensitivity to complex, often unknown environmental factors. These challenges call for adaptable learnin ...

“You never forget how to ride a bike”, – but how is that possible? The brain is able to learn complex skills, stop the practice for years, learn other skills in between, and still retrieve the original knowledge when necessary. The mechanisms of this capab ...

Robot motor skills can be acquired by deep reinforcement learning as neural networks to reflect state-action mapping. The selection of states has been demonstrated to be crucial for successful robot motor learning. However, because of the complexity of neu ...

High-dimensional data must be highly structured to be learnable. Although the compositional and hierarchical nature of data is often put forward to explain learnability, quantitative measurements establishing these properties are scarce. Likewise, accessin ...

Neurons in the human amygdala and hippocampus are classically thought to encode a person’s identity invariant to visual features. However, it remains largely unknown how visual information from higher visual cortical areas is translated into such a semanti ...

The success of self-supervised learning in computer vision and natural language processing has motivated pretraining methods on tabular data. However, most existing tabular self-supervised learning models fail to leverage information across multiple data t ...

Deep heteroscedastic regression models the mean and covariance of the target distribution through neural networks. The challenge arises from heteroscedasticity, which implies that the covariance is sample dependent and is often unknown. Consequently, recen ...

We consider the problem of learning a target function corresponding to a deep, extensive-width, non-linear neural network with random Gaussian weights. We consider the asymptotic limit where the number of samples, the input dimension and the network width ...

Blood pressure (BP) is a crucial indicator of cardiovascular health. Hypertension is a common life-threatening condition and a key factor of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Identifying abnormal BP fluctuations can allow for early detection and management o ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of crystalline porous materials that exhibit a vast chemical space owing to their tunable molecular building blocks with diverse topologies. An unlimited number of MOFs can, in principle, be synthesized. Machine ...

A range of behavioral and contextual factors, including eating and drinking behavior, mood, social context, and other daily activities, can significantly impact an individual's quality of life and overall well-being. Therefore, inferring everyday life aspe ...

Buildings significantly impact urban energy consumption. Mobile passive solutions, such as manual solar protections, can mitigate heat gains, but their effectiveness depends on occupants’ decisions. Analyzing occupant adjustments of manual systems is chall ...

Omnidirectional video streaming is usually implemented based on the representations of tiles, where the tiles are obtained by splitting the video frame into several rectangular areas and each tile is converted into multiple representations with different r ...

Speech recognition-based applications upon the advancements in artificial intelligence play an essential role to transform most aspects of modern life. However, speech recognition in real-life conditions (e.g., in the presence of overlapping speech, varyin ...

Laser powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M) is a pivotal additive manufacturing technique that enables the production of intricate components. In addition to enabling the production of complex shapes, it allows for a high degree of freedom in manipulating ...
