Multi-material structures have gained significant attention for their ability to combine properties of different alloys, making them promising for technical applications and potential replacements for conventional single-alloy components. The advancement o ...

It is of great interest to the energy community to understand how the mechano-physico-chemical phenomena that eventually lead to device degradation are related to the startup, operation, and shutdown phases. For electrocatalytic systems operating in liquid ...

Conductive domain walls (DWs) in ferroic materials have emerged as promising candidates for applications in nanoelectronics due to their unique properties such as high conductivity and nonvolatility. In this study, we investigate the atomic structure and c ...

DEMO will have a limited diagnostic set for optimization of reactor performance, and limited diagnostic coverage due to challenging reactor conditions. This poses challenges for control, especially for detachment control which is planned to be performed wi ...

Cation exchange offers a strong postsynthetic tool for nanoparticles that are unachievable via direct synthesis, but its velocity makes observing the onset of the reaction in the liquid state almost impossible. After successfully proving that cation exchan ...

We study the plasmon modes of gold nanorods (as short as similar to 100 nm) on a nonmetallic conductive substrate using scanning tunneling microscope-induced light emission (STM-LE) with a nonplasmonic tungsten tip at room temperature in high vacuum (10-7 ...

Ultrafast optical-domain spectroscopies allow to monitor in real time the motion of nuclei in molecules. Achieving element-selectivity had to await the advent of time resolved X-ray spectroscopy, which is now commonly carried at X-ray free electron lasers. ...

Structure determination of amorphous materials remains challenging, owing to the disorder inherent to these materials. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) powder crystallography is a powerful method to determine the structure of molecular solids, but disorder ...

Carbon K-edge resonant Auger spectra of gas-phase allene following excitation of the pre-edge 1s -> pi* transitions are presented and analysed with the support of EOM-CCSD/cc-pVTZ calculations. X-Ray absorption (XAS), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), valence ban ...

The work demonstrated in this thesis represent the path towards developing the large-scale fabrication of two-dimensional nanoporous membrane devices and use thereof as platforms to study nanoscale physics of water and ion flow through confined channels. M ...

The performance of SwissSPAD2 (SS2), a large scale, widefield time-gated CMOS SPAD imager developed for fluorescence lifetime imaging, has recently been described in the context of visible range and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) of dyes w ...

Transmission electron microscopy at atomic-resolution is a crucial tool in a variety of fields, ranging from materials science to biology. [1,2] Fast electron cameras have recently enabled high-speed observations atomic resolution. [3] Moreover, they have ...

We present CryoGAN, a new paradigm for single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) reconstruction based on unsupervised deep adversarial learning. In single-particle cryo-EM, the structure of a biomolecule needs to be reconstructed from a large set ...

We compare two transmission electron microscopy (TEM) based techniques that can provide highly spatially resolved quantitative measurements of magnetic induction fields at high sensitivity. To this end, the magnetic induction of a ferromagnetic NiFe nanowi ...

Optical microscopy, an invaluable tool in biology and medicine to observe and quantify cellular function, organ development, or disease mechanisms, requires constant trade-offs between spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution, invasiveness, acquisition t ...

The wave functions of a disordered two-dimensional electron gas at the quantum-critical Anderson transition are predicted to exhibit multifractal scaling in their real space amplitude. We experimentally investigate the appearance of these characteristics i ...

The rapid growth of the field of time-resolved and ultrafast electron microscopy has been accompanied by the active development of new instrumentation. Recently, time-resolved microscopes equipped with a field emission gun have been introduced, demonstrati ...

Microstructural changes in Ni–yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) near the YSZ electrolyte were examined by three-dimensional (3D) electron microscopy after electrolysis and fuel cell operation up to 10,700 h and 15,000 h, respectively. The depletion of Ni an ...

Atomically thin (2D) nanoporous membranes are an excellent platform for a broad scope of academic research. Their thickness and intrinsic ion selectivity (demonstrated for example in molybdenum disulfide-MoS2) make them particularly attractive for single-m ...

Atomic-resolution electron microscopy is a crucial tool to elucidate the structure of matter. Recently, fast electron cameras have added the time domain to high-resolution imaging, allowing static images to be acquired as movies from which sample drift can ...
