Driven by the environmental changes, penetration of renewables and the need for more flexible power grid, DC is reemerging as a basis for future power networks. Already established in the area of HVDC for very long distance transmission, more and more atte ...

In the last decade, the massive penetration of Distributed Generators (DGs) has brought significant technical challenges to all the aspects related to the planning and operation of distribution networks. Thus, smart grid concept has evolved as a new operat ...

The bidirectional LLC resonant converter operated at fixed switching frequency is a preferable candidate for a true dc transformer that does not actively control the power flow. This is due to its naturally stiff voltage ratio regardless of the imposed loa ...

In this work, we report on the switching performance of AlGaN/GaN lateral Tri-Anode SBDs. The Tri-Anode architecture leads to a more than 50% reduction in the device charge with respect to conventional planar structure, confirmed both by capacitive and rev ...

In the wide range of applications for power supplies, the ones dedicated to feeding superconducting magnets occupy a niche. This particular kind of magnets has the intrinsic property of having zero resistance, and is only used in high-end facilities for fu ...

Conventional boost converters, while having a high level of simplicity and robustness, are known to have poor efficiency at high step-up regime. More complicated topologies have been extensively explored to increase the step-up ratio while keeping a high-e ...

AC/DC power distribution networks use various types of power converters to interconnect their buses, active front ends between AC and DC buses, and DC transformers between DC buses. Different active front end control methods, like voltage or power regulati ...

Maximizing the efficiency and power density of dc-dc converters demands parallel optimizations in design and control, especially for variable-frequency converters operating over wide frequency ranges. This work presents the full-scale optimization of a kil ...

Large horsepower induction motors play a critical role in the operation of industrial facilities. In this respect, the distribution network operators dedicate a high priority to the operational safety of these motor loads. In this paper, the induction moto ...

As the share of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs) in power distribution systems increases, hybrid AC/DC distribution systems are drawing more interest. Indeed, CIDERs usually rely on DC power and hybrid AC/DC grids with few Network ...

Owing to the advancements in the area of power electronics, efficient and flexible ac to dc conversion is made possible, bringing back into focus the idea of the dc power transmission at various voltage levels. Several technical and economical factors advo ...

The present invention relates to a propulsion module (1) for generating wave-like motion in liquid. The propulsion module (1) comprises: a motor (7) for generating rotational motion; a set of conversion devices comprising a first conversion device (91) and ...

Antarctic precipitation remains poorly characterized and understood, especially within the boundary layer. This is due in part to a still-limited amount of surface-based remote sensing observations. A suite of cloud and precipitation remote-sensing instrum ...

Large horsepower induction motors play a critical role as industrial drives in production facilities. The operational safety of distribution networks during the starting transients of these motor loads is a critical concern for the operators. In this paper ...

In recent years, DC grids have gained momentum due to the advantages they display over their AC counterparts. For instance, high voltage DC grids have been established as the most prominent solution in the underwater power transmission or interconnection o ...

The global problem of energy supply and the reduction of the carbon footprint can only be solved by a massive replacement of fossil fuels or atomic energy by renewable resources. As the latter are mostly weather-dependent, they are uncontrollable and unpre ...

The concept of a multi-source inverter (MSI) based on NPC topology was recently introduced for hybrid-electric powertrains to connect several dc sources to the traction load in a single conversion stage without magnetics. This work proposes a new modulatio ...

To obtain a resilient and flexible DC grid, reliable means for interfacing its parts operating under different voltage levels must be ensured. This paper proposes bidirectional, isolated, DC–DC converter designed to connect either high/medium voltage bipol ...
