According to the concepts of attribute axis and attribute coordinate system, porphine and 11 kinds of bridge carbon substituted porphyrins as donors and 9 common acceptors A-I have been designed and calculated at the density functional B3LYP level. The sub ...

Aims/hypothesis Structural and functional imaging of the islets of Langerhans and the insulin-secreting beta cells represents a significant challenge and a long-lasting objective in diabetes research. In vivo microscopy offers a valuable insight into beta ...

This thesis advances the field of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) through the development of device designs, fabrication processes, strain characterization technique and modelling tool. It provides the first demonstration that DEAs can be interfaced ...

Dysfunctions in tissue metabolism can be detected at early stages by oxygen partial pressure (pO(2)) measurement. The measurement of emission lifetimes offers very promising and non-invasive approach to estimate pO(2) in vivo. This study compares two exten ...

We demonstrate the use of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) for mechanical stimulation of cells in vitro. The development of living tissues is regulated by their mechanical environment through the modification of fundamental cellular functions such as ...

The discovery of the anticancer properties of cisplatin in 1965 heralded the development of metallopharmaceuticals and founded a revolution in cancer therapy. Platinum drugs are believed to induce cytotoxicity by cross-linking DNA, causing changes to the D ...

A meso-tetraaryl ruthenium porphyrin complex having four polymerizable vinylbenzoxy groups (2) has been synthesized by reaction of pyrrole with 4-(vinylbenzoxy)benzaldehyde and subsequent metalation with [Ru-3(CO)(12)]. The porphyrin complex was immobilize ...

Fluorescence microscopy techniques are well established research tools and have proven their use in a large variety of biomedical applications. Microscopic molecular contrast is achieved by imaging fluorescent dyes that bind specifically to a molecule of i ...

Recruitment of leukocytes from blood to tissues is a multi-step process playing a major role in the activation of inflammatory responses. Tethering and rolling of leukocytes along the vessel wall, followed by arrest and transmigration through the endotheli ...

The interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions provides a well-defined framework for fundamental studies of heterogeneous charge transfer processes. Recent developments in experimental methodology have allowed addressing the kinetics of electro ...
