Over the past 40 years, hard disks, the traditional building block of storage systems, have become increasingly slower when compared to the other system components such as the main memory and the CPU. Hard disks face mechanical constraints that cause their ...

In visual crowding, the perception of a target deteriorates in the presence of nearby flankers. Traditionally, target-flanker interactions have been considered as local, mostly deleterious, low-level, and feature specific, occurring when information is poo ...

Spinal cord injuries alter motor function by disconnecting neural circuits above and below the lesion, rendering sensory inputs a primary source of direct external drive to neuronal networks caudal to the injury. Here, we studied mice lacking functional mu ...

Recent advances in solid state technology have led to the introduction of Solid State Drives (SSDs). Todays SSDs store data persistently using NAND flash memory. While SSDs are more expensive than hard disks when measured in dollars per gigabyte, they are ...

A large-aperture and large-angle MEMS-based 2D pointing mirror is presented. The device is electromagnetically actuated by a moving-magnet/stationary-coil pair and potentially suited for high power laser beam shaping and beam pointing applications, such as ...

The achievable efficiency for external current drive through electron-cyclotron waves in a demonstration tokamak reactor is investigated. Two possible reactor designs, one for steady state and one for pulsed operation, are considered. Beam propagation, abs ...

Given a source of iid samples of edges of an input graph G with n vertices and m edges, how many samples does one need to compute a constant factor approximation to the maximum matching size in G? Moreover, is it possible to obtain such an estimate in a sm ...

A detailed analysis of electromechanically induced absorption (EMIA) in a circuit nano-electromechanical hybrid system consisting of a superconducting microwave resonator coupled to a nanomechanical beam is presented. By performing two-tone spectroscopy ex ...

In the Freudian theory of the psychical apparatus, the introduction from the 1920s onward of the second drive dualism appears as a major turning point. The idea of a "death drive," first expressed in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (Freud, 1920), is generall ...

Currently, the different pollutant emissions caused by the use of fossil energies are an increasingly important concern and numerous studies aim at developing technological solutions allowing the progressive replacement of the fossil energies by more susta ...

Nuclear fusion power plants require electron cyclotron (EC) heating and current drive (H&CD) systems for plasma heating and stabilization. High-power microwave beams between 1 and 2?MW generated by gyrotrons propagate in a dedicated waveguide transmission ...

We propose a novel tunnel field-effect transistor (TFET) concept called the electron–hole bilayer TFET (EHBTFET). This device exploits the carrier tunneling through a bias-induced electron–hole bilayer in order to achieve improved switching and higher driv ...

Analytical solutions and a vast majority of numerical ones for fracture propagation in saturated porous media yield smooth behavior while experiments, field observations and a few numerical solutions reveal stepwise crack advancement and pressure oscillati ...

The design of highly glazed building has become a worldwide trend in modern architecture. However, glazing may induce large thermal loss in winter while increase cooling load in summer, and it may also cause glare. In order to solve the problems, a novel m ...

Advanced tokamak operation in ITER, such as the steady-state and hybrid modes, requires an active realtime feedback control of plasma profiles to achieve the advanced regimes for sustained operation. In this work, we have explored a potentially robust cont ...

The NEURON simulator has been developed over the past three decades and is widely used by neuroscientists to model the electrical activity of neuronal networks. Large network simulation projects using NEURON have supercomputer allocations that individually ...

The present invention concerns a magnet-assisted ball drive. The drive comprises a ball and a drive element in contact with the ball. The drive element is arranged to be rotated around its axis of rotation to drive the ball. The ball and the drive element ...

Simulations of nuclear reactor physics can disagree significantly from experimental evidence, even when the most accurate models are used. An important part of this bias from experiment is caused by nuclear data. The nuclear data have inherent uncertaintie ...

We propose a novel Tunnel field-effect transistor (TFET) concept called the electron-hole bilayer TFET (EHBTFET). This device exploits the carrier tunneling through a bias-induced electron-hole bilayer in order to achieve improved switching and higher driv ...

This dissertation considers mechatronic systems driven by piezoelectric ultrasonic motors (PUM). The focus is set on optimal system design and sensorless position control. Mechatronic industry faces the challenge to deliver ever more efficient and reliable ...
