Hollow-core 3D printing (HC3DP) proposes a new method for the production of lightweight, material-efficient thermoplastic 3D printed elements. This new fabrication approach promises material savings of 50-80%, while increasing the extrusion rate significan ...

Volumetric 3D printing is a novel technique that offers promising new perspectives in tissue engineering. In volumetric 3D printing, photosensitive gels or liquids are solidified by projecting light patterns via reverse tomography. Recent results show that ...

Precise packaging of nanoliter amounts of liquid in a microsystem is important for many biomedical applications. However, existing liquid encapsulation technologies have limitations in terms of liquid waste, evaporation, trapped bubbles, and liquid degrada ...

Hydrogels are among the first materials expressly designed for their use in biomedicine. However, state-of-the-art applications of hydrogels are severely limited because they are typically either too soft or too brittle such that they cannot bear significa ...

Transient electronics have emerged as a promising class of devices, capable of breaking down without harmful side effects to their environment. They have tremendous potential as bioresorbable electronics for temporary applications in the human body, and as ...

In recent years, there has been a significant revolution in the field of deep learning, which has demonstrated its effectiveness in automatically capturing intricate patterns from large datasets. However, the majority of these successes in Computer Vision ...

We present a new cell culture technology for large-scale mechanobiology studies capable of generating and applying optically controlled uniform compression on single cells in 3D. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are individually encapsulated inside an optical ...

Current research of designing prosthetic robotic hands mainly focuses on improving their functionality by devising new mechanical structures and actuation systems. Most of existing work relies on a single structure/system (e.g., bone-only or tissue-only) a ...

In this work we perform a neutron Bragg edge tomography of stainless steel 316L additive manufacturing samples, one as built via standard laser powder bed fusion, and one using the novel three-dimensional (3D) laser shock peening technique. First, we consi ...

In this thesis several advances are made to the emerging field of 3D printed mechanical sensors. Techniques and processes were developed to enable the integration of highly conductive, and capacitive and piezoresistive sensing features embedded within 3D p ...

Our aim is to develop a 3D model unit of cardiac muscle: an in-vitro analog of the trabeculae carneae found in vivo. As a base hydrogel matrix for cardiomyocyte culture in 3D, we develop a blend of decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) and fibrin. Thi ...

Laser powder bed fusion is an efficient technique for additive manufacturing of metallic materials. The quality of the material produced depends on the optimization of a large range of build parameters and the complex thermo-mechanical build process is pro ...

Additive manufacturing (AM) processes such as material extrusion and vat photopolymerization all require supports to print parts with overhang features. These additional supports using the same or different materials are a waste of materials since they nee ...

Functional printing is a versatile mass production method that has gained considerable scientific and industrial attention in the past few years. A wide range of electronics from passive circuit components (e.g., resistors and interconnects) to high-perfor ...

Bioprinting of functional tissues could overcome tissue shortages and allow a more rapid response for treatments. However, despite recent progress in bioprinting, and its outstanding ability to position cells and biomaterials in a precise 3D manner, its su ...

Smart nanofibrillar constructs can be a promising technological solution for many emerging and established fields, facilitating the potential impact of nano-scale strategies to address relevant technological challenges. As a fabrication technique, electros ...

Grayscale electron beam lithography (g-EBL) is a fabrication technique that allows for tunable control of resist topography. In most cases, the height of the structures is in the submicron regime. Here, we present an extensive experimental characterization ...

Tissue morphogenesis and regeneration are essentially mechanical processes that involve coordination of cellular forces, production and structural remodeling of extracellular matrix (ECM), and cell migration. Discovering the principles of cell–ECM interact ...

We propose a novel combination of two-photon polymerization (2PP) three-dimensional (3D) micro-manufacturing with drop-on-demand inkjet printing (DOD IJP) to fabricate 3D microporous scaffolds embedded with minute quantities of releasable drug. We designed ...

In native tissues, the interaction between cells and the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) is reciprocal, as cells not only receive signals from the ECM but also actively remodel it through secretion of cell-derived ECM. However, very little is known ...
