Sensor system (1) comprising a frame (306) supporting a force-sensing tip (310) arranged to generate a signal based upon a force applied by said force-sensing tip (310) to a material to be tested, characterised in that said system (1) further comprises:- an ...

This article presents a new modular robotic platform for enabling reconfigurable, actively controlled, high-degree-of-freedom (high-DoF) systems with compact form factor. The robotic modules exploit the advantages of origami-inspired construction methods a ...

The present invention concerns a method for encoding a given 3D shape into a target 2D linkage. The method comprises: (a) providing an initial 2D surface; and (b) defining on the initial 2D surface an auxetic pattern of geometric elements planarly linked b ...

We present a new mechanical oscillator architecture that can be made insensitive to linear and angular accelerations while keeping constant oscillation frequency. The oscillator has the kinematics of a Watt linkage, so we call it a Watt oscillator. In orde ...

The revelation of mechanism bifurcation is essential in the design and analysis of reconfigurable mechanisms. The first- and second-order based methods have successfully revealed the bifurcation of mechanisms. However, they fail in the novel Schatz-inspire ...

Soft actuators using pressurized air are being widely used due to their inherent compliance, conformability and customizability. These actuators are powered and controlled by pneumatic supply systems (PSSs) consisting of components such as compressors, val ...

Deployable structures are widely used in space applications such as solar arrays and antennas. Recently, inspired by origami, more deployable structures have been developed. This paper outlined a novel design scheme for deployable structures by taking a pl ...

Robotic origami design allows creating meso-scale robotic systems and mechanisms not limited by degrees of freedom, miniaturization and assembly downsides of conventional transmission mechanisms. However, unlike the traditional rigid approaches, robotic or ...

The lack of soft high-dielectric-permittivity elastomers responsive to a low voltage has been a long-standing obstacle for the industrialization of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) technology. Here, elastomers that not only possess a high dielectric pe ...

In this article, a method for identification of equivalent stiffness was proposed based on a genetic algorithm by studying the stiffness characteristics of autoeliminating clearance auxiliary bearing devices (ACABDs) in static condition. Subsequently, the ...

We present X-shells, a new class of deployable structures formed by an ensemble of elastically deforming beams coupled through rotational joints. An X-shell can be assembled conveniently in a flat configuration from standard elastic beam elements and then ...

A planar actuator device, including a base plate including a first, second, and third pair of planar coils, each pair of planar coils having an inner coil and an outer coil, each pair of planar coils arranged along a first, second, and third linear motion ...

Soft pneumatic actuators promise simple, adaptable, and safe manipulation, but the nature of pneumatic circuits limits the scalability of this approach. This paper introduces a method to augment the degrees-of-freedom of soft pneumatic actuators without in ...
