This work presents a CMOS-compatible multilayer platform integrating energy storage and tunable varactor functionality within a compact system. By co-integrating antiferroelectric (AFE) and dielectric (DE) layers, the design achieves tunability up to 28%, ...

High-power tunable lasers are intensely pursued due to their vast application potential such as in telecom, ranging, and molecular sensing. Integrated photonics, however, is usually considered not suitable for high-power applications mainly due to its smal ...

Reversible Solid Oxide electrolyser (rSOE) is a promising solution for long-duration energy storage due to its exceptional features such as inherent reversibility, co-electrolysis capability in electrolysis mode, high efficiency, adaptability to multiple f ...

Decarbonizing mobility and integrating more renewable sources in electricity production are necessary levers to meet the climate targets. Coupling electric vehicle (EV) charging with photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation could help to provide clean elec ...

High-temperature sodium-nickel chloride (Na-NiCl2) batteries offer a competitive solution for stationary energy storage due to their long-term stability, high energy efficiency, and sustainable raw materials. However, scaling up this technology faces chall ...

Stored energies of radiating systems have generated research interest for several decades due to their relationship with Q-factor and fractional bandwidth. In this letter, material derivatives are used to provide a new interpretation of widely used stored ...

With the increase in penetration of power electronic converters in the power systems, a demand for overcurrent/ overloading capability has risen for the fault clearance duration. This article gives an overview of the limiting factors and the recent technol ...

Aqueous rechargeable zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) are regarded as a promising candidates for next-generation energy storage devices but strongly hindered by the limited utilization of the zinc metal anode (below 5%) due to the active water/anion corrosion. He ...

Metal hydrides are an interesting group of chemical compounds, able to store hydrogen in a reversible, compact and safe manner. Among them, A(2)B(7)-type intermetallic alloys based on La-Mg-Ni have attracted particular attention due to their high electroch ...

The proton, as the cationic form of the lightest element-H, is regarded as most ideal charge carrier in "rocking chair " batteries. However, current research on proton batteries is still at its infancy, and they usually deliver low capacity and suffer from ...

The progressive displacing of conventional generation in favor of renewable energy sources requires restoring an adequate capacity of regulating power to ensure reliable operation of power systems. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) are considered to b ...

Modular multilevel converters achieve voltage scalability through the series connection of cells, each with its own capacitance. However, this converter structure using floating energy storage elements increases the control complexity significantly. The vo ...

The overall EDGE objective is to fast-track the growth of locally-sourced decentralized renewable energy in Switzerland and to ensure that by 2035 and 2050, when ambitious shares of renewable energy are reached, the Swiss energy system is designed and oper ...

The extensive deployment of non-synchronous generation determines lower level of grid inertia resulting in deteriorated frequency containment performance and abnormal frequency excursions in case of contingency. This calls for identifying assets, controls, ...

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have developed rapidly owing to the high natural abundance, wide distribution, and low cost of sodium. Among the various materials used in SIBs, sodium superion conductor (NASICON)-based electrode materials with remarkable struc ...

Starch is the major form of energy storage in plant cells and forms discrete, semi-crystalline granules within plastids. Here the authors use electron tomography and nanoSIMS to show that Arabidopsis starch granules initiate in stromal pockets between thyl ...

Modern datacenters need to tackle efficiently the increasing demand for computing resources while minimizing energy usage and monetary costs. Power market operators have recently introduced emerging demand-response programs, in which electricity consumers ...

We highlight fast Li-ion diffusion in hypothetical tetragonal Li10GeP2O12 (LGPO), as a counterpart to the well-known phases of orthorhombic (LISICON) LGPO, thio-LISICON, and tetragonal Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS). We use extended Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics i ...

The optimal diffusion of Building Integrated PhotoVoltaics (BIPV) in cities requires diligent planning to arrange temporal and spatial distribution of energy, while preserving the aesthetics of city landscapes. Benefitting from an increasing quality of 3D ...

To meet the net-zero emission target by 2050, Switzerland must install between 34 and 50 GW of distributed photovoltaic (PV). The inherent challenge with such an extensive integration of stochastic generation is to provide the flexibility for balancing sup ...
