Sign Language conveys information through multiple channels composed of manual (handshape, hand movement) and non-manual (facial expression, mouthing, body posture) components. Sign language assessment involves giving granular feedback to a learner, in ter ...

This paper considers the multi-agent linear least-squares problem in a server-agent network architecture. The system comprises multiple agents, each with a set of local data points. The agents are connected to a server, and there is no inter-agent communic ...

This paper investigates the fundamental regression task of learning k neurons (a.k.a. teachers) from Gaussian input, using two-layer ReLU neural networks with width m (a.k.a. students) and m, k = O(1), trained via gradient descent under proper initializati ...

Rigid body interactions are fundamental to numerous scientific disciplines, but remain challenging to simulate due to their abrupt nonlinear nature and sensitivity to complex, often unknown environmental factors. These challenges call for adaptable learnin ...

In this paper, we present an exact (i.e. non-approximated) and linear measurement model for hybrid AC/DC micro-grids for recursive state estimation (SE). More specifically, an exact linear model of a voltage source converter (VSC) is proposed. It relies on ...

Neurons in the human amygdala and hippocampus are classically thought to encode a person’s identity invariant to visual features. However, it remains largely unknown how visual information from higher visual cortical areas is translated into such a semanti ...

This thesis consists of three applications of machine learning techniques to risk management. The first chapter proposes a deep learning approach to estimate physical forward default intensities of companies. Default probabilities are computed using artifi ...

Model-free data-driven computational mechanics (DDCM) is a new paradigm for simulations in solid mechanics. The modeling step associated to the definition of a material constitutive law is circumvented through the introduction of an abstract phase space in ...

We consider a least-squares/relaxation finite element method for the numerical solution of the prescribed Jacobian equation. We look for its solution via a least-squares approach. We introduce a relaxation algorithm that decouples this least-squares proble ...

This thesis focuses on non-parametric covariance estimation for random surfaces, i.e.~functional data on a two-dimensional domain. Non-parametric covariance estimation lies at the heart of functional data analysis, and considerations of statistical and com ...

In Bourlard and Kamp (Biol Cybern 59(4):291-294, 1998), it was theoretically proven that autoencoders (AE) with single hidden layer (previously called "auto-associative multilayer perceptrons") were, in the best case, implementing singular value decomposit ...

A range of behavioral and contextual factors, including eating and drinking behavior, mood, social context, and other daily activities, can significantly impact an individual's quality of life and overall well-being. Therefore, inferring everyday life aspe ...

Iterative substructuring Domain Decomposition (DD) methods have been extensively studied, and they are usually associated with nonoverlapping decompositions. It is less known that classical overlapping DD methods can also be formulated in substructured for ...

We investigate popular resampling methods for estimating the uncertainty of statistical models, such as subsampling, bootstrap and the jackknife, and their performance in high-dimensional supervised regression tasks. We provide a tight asymptotic descripti ...

Cartesian robots have position-dependent dynamics that should be accounted for in high performance applications. Traditional methods design Linear Time Invariant (LTI) controllers which are robustly stable with respect to position variations, but require a ...

Buildings significantly impact urban energy consumption. Mobile passive solutions, such as manual solar protections, can mitigate heat gains, but their effectiveness depends on occupants’ decisions. Analyzing occupant adjustments of manual systems is chall ...

This manuscript serves a specific purpose: to give readers from fields such as material science, chemistry, or electronics an overview of implementing a reservoir computing (RC) experiment with her/his material system. Introductory literature on the topic ...

Proteins are foundational biomolecules of life playing a crucial role in a myriad of biological processes. Their function often requires interplay with other biomolecules, including proteins themselves. Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are essential for ...

This dissertation introduces traffic forecasting methods for different network configurations and data availability. Chapter 2 focuses on single freeway cases. Although its topology is simple, the non-linearity of traffic features makes this prediction sti ...

In today's era of rapid urbanization, smart cities are emerging as a beacon of efficiency and sustainability. At the heart of this evolution is the integration of Machine Learning (ML), which can transform vast streams of data into informed decisions. This ...
