Soft robots are being increasingly developed and deployed for underwater applications such as exploration, monitoring, and rescue owing to their innate compliance, mechanical and chemical stability, and waterproof properties. However, they are still predom ...

We demonstrate a hybrid integrated low-noise laser based on a 900 nm laser diode self-injection locked to a microresonator with MEMS actuators exhibiting a frequency actuation bandwidth >10 MHz and a tuning efficiency >30 MHz/V. ...

Social insects, such as ants, termites, and honeybees, have evolved sophisticated societies where the collaborative efforts of "simple" individuals can lead to the emergence of complex dynamics. The reliance of each organism on the collective is so great t ...

Fluidic actuation enables movement in a wide range of mechanical systems, from simple laboratory devices to more complex industrial machinery. Fluids are used to generate motion of mechanical pieces. The term "fluids" encompasses two types of technologies: ...

Shape-changing robots adapt their own morphology to address a wider range of functions or environments than is possible with a fixed or rigid structure. Akin to biological organisms, the ability to alter shape or configuration emerges from the underlying m ...

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based soft polymer optical fibers (POFs) have recently demonstrated their intriguing potential for different sensing applications like strain or temperature sensing. Recent studies have elaborated on the sensing capability of PD ...

Dielectric elastomers (DEs) are key materials in actuators, sensors, energy harvesters, and stretchable electronics. These devices find applications in important emerging fields such as personalized medicine, renewable energy, and soft robotics. However, e ...

Many natural materials are structured on different length scales. This structuring often leads to an intricate interplay between soft and stiff components, which significantly improves the fracture toughness of these materials. A class of soft material tha ...

Stories from the future of intelligent machines—from rescue drones to robot spouses—and accounts of cutting-edge research that could make it all possible. Tech prognosticators promised us robots—autonomous humanoids that could carry out any number of tasks ...

Collision resilience is an important feature of robots deployed in unstructured and partially unpredictable environments. Herein, a novel dual stiffness (DS) tensegrity platform to integrate collision resilience into a robot body is proposed. The proposed ...

Lumped parameter model and mock circulation loop are two tools commonly used in biomedical research to simulate cardiac system in order to study different assist devices. In this paper, a lumped parameter model is proposed to simulate a circulation loop. T ...

As the field of robotics continues to grow outside the manufacturing environment into our daily lives, the interactions between humans and robots are increasingly becoming close and dynamic. This type of environment requires robots to be less rigid, multi- ...

A design, manufacturing, and control methodology is presented for the transduction of ultrasound into frequency-selective actuation of multibody hydrogel mechanical systems. The modular design of compliant mechanisms is compatible with direct laser writing ...

The objective of this study is to integrate biomimetic robots into small groups of zebrafish and to modulate their collective behaviours. A possible approach is to have the robots behave like sheepdogs. In this case, the robots would behave like a differen ...

High-speed actuation of laser frequency(1)is critical in applications using lasers and frequency combs(2,3), and is a prerequisite for phase locking, frequency stabilization and stability transfer among optical carriers. For example, high-bandwidth feedbac ...

The lack of soft high-dielectric-permittivity elastomers responsive to a low voltage has been a long-standing obstacle for the industrialization of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) technology. Here, elastomers that not only possess a high dielectric pe ...

The Center for Artificial Muscles of EPFL in Neuchâtel focuses his research on designing a less invasive cardiac assist device based on a dielectric elastomer actuator. The idea is to place a ring around the aorta and activate it to help failing heart pump ...

For soft robots to leave the lab and enter unstructured environments, proprioception is required to understand how interactions in the field affect the soft structure. In this work, we present sensor-embedded soft pneumatic actuators (sSPA) that can observ ...

With the exponential growth of robotics and the fast development of their advanced cognitive and motor capabilities, one can start to envision humans and robots jointly working together in unstructured environments. Yet, for that to be possible, robots nee ...
