Diffraction-before-destruction imaging with ultrashort X-ray pulses can visualize non-equilibrium processes, such as chemical reactions, with sub-femtosecond precision in the native environment. Here, a nanospecimen diffracts a single X-ray flash before it ...

Multi-material structures have gained significant attention for their ability to combine properties of different alloys, making them promising for technical applications and potential replacements for conventional single-alloy components. The advancement o ...

It is of great interest to the energy community to understand how the mechano-physico-chemical phenomena that eventually lead to device degradation are related to the startup, operation, and shutdown phases. For electrocatalytic systems operating in liquid ...

The alloying of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is an established route to produce robust semiconductors with continuously tunable optoelectronic properties. However, typically reported methods for fabricating alloyed 2D TMD na ...

This thesis presents the development, construction, and benchmark of an experimental platform that combines cold fermionic 6Li atoms with locally controllable light-matter interactions. To enable local control, a new device, the cavity-microscope, was crea ...

Controlled atomic patterning is an attractive tool to fine tune properties of graphitic lattice. Several O-functionalized derivatives of graphitic lattice have been widely studied, e.g., graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and functionalized carbon nan ...

Nanoscale detection and control of the magnetic order underpins a spectrum of condensed-matter research and device functionalities involving magnetism. The key principle involved is the breaking of time-reversal symmetry, which in ferromagnets is generated ...

Cation exchange offers a strong postsynthetic tool for nanoparticles that are unachievable via direct synthesis, but its velocity makes observing the onset of the reaction in the liquid state almost impossible. After successfully proving that cation exchan ...

We study the plasmon modes of gold nanorods (as short as similar to 100 nm) on a nonmetallic conductive substrate using scanning tunneling microscope-induced light emission (STM-LE) with a nonplasmonic tungsten tip at room temperature in high vacuum (10-7 ...

Carbon K-edge resonant Auger spectra of gas-phase allene following excitation of the pre-edge 1s -> pi* transitions are presented and analysed with the support of EOM-CCSD/cc-pVTZ calculations. X-Ray absorption (XAS), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), valence ban ...

Structure determination of amorphous materials remains challenging, owing to the disorder inherent to these materials. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) powder crystallography is a powerful method to determine the structure of molecular solids, but disorder ...

We present an implementation of the Frenkel exciton model into the OpenMolcas program package enabling calculations of collective electronic excited states of molecular aggregates based on a multiconfigurational wave function description of the individual ...

Semiconductor materials have given rise to today's digital technology and consumer electronics. Widespread adoption is closely linked to the ability to process and integrate them in devices at scale. Where flexibility and large surfaces are required, such ...

The surface charge of an open water surface is crucialfor solvationphenomena and interfacial processes in aqueous systems. However, themagnitude of the charge is controversial, and the physical mechanismof charging remains incompletely understood. Here we ...

The work demonstrated in this thesis represent the path towards developing the large-scale fabrication of two-dimensional nanoporous membrane devices and use thereof as platforms to study nanoscale physics of water and ion flow through confined channels. M ...

This thesis investigates novel single-molecule luminescence phenomena at their inherent, sub-molecular length scale. The microscopic understanding of luminescence processes will be crucial for the continued improvement of organic optoelectronic and semicon ...

We compare two transmission electron microscopy (TEM) based techniques that can provide highly spatially resolved quantitative measurements of magnetic induction fields at high sensitivity. To this end, the magnetic induction of a ferromagnetic NiFe nanowi ...

CsPbBr3 has received wide attention due to its superior emission yield and better thermal stability compared to other organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites. In this study, through an interplay of theory and experiments, we investigate the molecular ori ...

Transmission electron microscopy at atomic-resolution is a crucial tool in a variety of fields, ranging from materials science to biology. [1,2] Fast electron cameras have recently enabled high-speed observations atomic resolution. [3] Moreover, they have ...

In dilute nitride InyGa1-yAs1-xNx alloys, a spatially controlled tuning of the energy gap can be realized by combining the introduction of N atoms-inducing a significant reduction of this parameter-with that of hydrogen atoms, which neutralize the effect o ...
