In a previous paper, a new gyrokinetic quasilinear model was proposed to study turbulent momentum transport in tokamaks with up-down asymmetric plasma shaping and toroidal flow shear (Sun et al 2024 Nuclear Fusion 64 036026). In this work, we start by appl ...

Sinuous channels wandering through coastal wetlands have been thought to lack lateral-migration features like meander cutoffs and oxbows, spurring the broad interpretation that tidal and fluvial meanders differ morphodynamically. Motivated by recent work s ...

Informed by longstanding artistic practice, this doctoral thesis approaches entanglements of Swiss coloniality in Brazil and Switzerland under the lens of land, archive, and visuality. The enduring legacies of imperial capitalism in the former Colonia Leop ...

With the current trend of increasing complexity of industrial systems, the construction and monitoring of health indicators becomes even more challenging. Given that health indicators are commonly employed to predict the end of life, a crucial criterion fo ...

Daily manipulation tasks are characterized by regular features associated with the task structure, which can be described by multiple geometric primitives related to actions and object shapes. Only using Cartesian coordinate systems cannot fully represent ...

This work studies the nearshore hydrodynamics of a shallow turbulent flow entering a laterally unconfined quiescent ambient with a sloping bottom boundary. Examples of such flow are neutrally buoyant ebb tidal jets and hyperpycnal river plumes entering ope ...

Fluctuation dynamos occur in most turbulent plasmas in astrophysics and are the prime candidates for amplifying and maintaining cosmic magnetic fields. A few analytical models exist to describe their behavior, but they are based on simplifying assumptions. ...

In this study, we map different types of channel geomorphic units in a sediment-starved, residual-flow reach before and after an artificial flood. Bedload particles of a previous sediment augmentation measure are tracked with passive integrated transponder ...

In this research, the flow features around a spur dike located in a 90˚ sharp channel bend have been studied experimentally in detail. Results showed that the effects of the spur dike on upstream sections increased by increasing α (spur dike location from ...

The perpendicular propagation velocity of turbulent density fluctuations is an important parameter in fusion plasmas, since sheared plasma flows are crucial for reducing turbulence, and thus an essential input parameter for turbulent transport simulations. ...

The Obukhov-Corrsin theory of scalar turbulence [21, 54] advances quantitative predictions on passive-scalar advection in a turbulent regime and can be regarded as the analogue for passive scalars of Kolmogorov's K41 theory of fully developed turbulence [4 ...

Accurately simulating snow-cover dynamics and the snow-atmosphere coupling is of major importance for topics as wide-ranging as water resources, natural hazards and climate change impacts with consequences for sea-level rise. We present a new modelling fra ...

The log law of the wall, joining the inner, near-wall mean velocity profile (MVP) in wall-bounded turbulent flows to the outer region, has been a permanent fixture of turbulence research for over hundred years, but there is still no general agreement on th ...

Steep streams involve shallow, supercritical turbulent flows over a permeable bed made up of coarse particles. They usually exhibit higher flow resistance and stronger mass and momentum exchanges between the stream and subsurface flow than low-gradient str ...

Predicting particle transport in turbulent flows has a plethora of applications, some of which are: the transport of atmospheric aerosols, the deposition of blood cells in the arteries of human bodies and the atomization of fuel droplets in combustion cham ...

We propose here a method to experimentally quantify unsteady leading-edge flow separation on aerofoils with finite thickness. The methodology relies on the computation of a leading-edge suction parameter based on measured values of the partial circulation ...

Two ways for producing a transport barrier through strong shear of the E x B poloidal flow have been investigated using GYSELA gyrokinetic simulations in a flux-driven regime. The first one uses an external poloidal momentum (i.e. vorticity) source that lo ...

A well-known, previously only 1D, algorithm using the Sparse Representation of Signals and an iterative Block Coordinate Descent method (the SparSpec-1D algorithm) has been further developed and tested in a 2D spatial domain to obtain the toroidal and polo ...

In this thesis, we propose model order reduction techniques for high-dimensional PDEs that preserve structures of the original problems and develop a closure modeling framework leveraging the Mori-Zwanzig formalism and recurrent neural networks. Since high ...

The presence of aerodynamic vortices is widespread in nature. They can be found at small scales near the wing tip of flying insects or at bigger scale in the form of hurricanes, cyclones or even galaxies. They are identified as coherent regions of high vor ...
