Résumé

Supramenability of groups is characterised in terms of invariant measures on locally compact spaces. This opens the door to constructing interesting crossed product C*-algebras for non-supramenable groups. In particular, stable Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class are constructed using crossed products for both amenable and non-amenable groups.

Thompson groups

In mathematics, the Thompson groups (also called Thompson's groups, vagabond groups or chameleon groups) are three groups, commonly denoted , that were introduced by Richard Thompson in some unpublished handwritten notes in 1965 as a possible counterexample to the von Neumann conjecture. Of the three, F is the most widely studied, and is sometimes referred to as the Thompson group or Thompson's group. The Thompson groups, and F in particular, have a collection of unusual properties that have made them counterexamples to many general conjectures in group theory.

Groupe moyennable

En mathématiques, un groupe moyennable (parfois appelé groupe amenable par calque de l'anglais) est un groupe topologique localement compact qu'on peut munir d'une opération de « moyenne » sur les fonctions bornées, invariante par les translations par les éléments du groupe. La définition initiale, donnée à partir d'une mesure (simplement additive) des sous-ensembles du groupe, fut proposée par John von Neumann en 1929 à la suite de son analyse du paradoxe de Banach-Tarski.

Espace localement compact

En topologie, un espace localement compact est un espace séparé qui admet des voisinages compacts pour tous ses points. Un tel espace n'est pas nécessairement compact lui-même mais on peut y généraliser (au moins partiellement) beaucoup de résultats sur les espaces compacts. Ce sont aussi les espaces qu'on peut « rendre » compacts avec un point grâce à la compactification d'Alexandrov. La compacité est une source très fertile de résultats en topologie mais elle reste une propriété très contraignante.
