Human motor skill acquisition is improved by performance feedback, and coupling such feedback with extrinsic reward (such as money) can enhance skill learning. However, the neurophysiology underlying such behavioral effect is unclear. To bridge this gap, w ...

Adaptively increasing the difficulty level in learning was shown to be beneficial than increasing the level after some fixed time intervals. To efficiently adapt the level, we aimed at decoding the subjective difficulty level based on Electroencephalograph ...

All functions we use in our everyday life depend on a complex interplay between both cortical and subcortical brain areas, communicating in between each others. When a region is affected by either an accident, aging or neurodegenerative diseases, the whole ...

Objective. Powered lower-limb prostheses relying on decoding motor intentions from non-invasive sensors, like electromyographic (EMG) signals, can significantly improve the quality of life of amputee subjects. However, the optimal combination of high decod ...

Real-time quality assessment (rtQA) of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) based on blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal changes is critical for neuroimaging research and clinical applications. The losses of BOLD sensitivity because of diffe ...

Objective. Recent results have shown the potentials of neural interfaces to provide sensory feedback to subjects with limb amputation increasing prosthesis usability. However, their advantages for decoding motor control signals over current methods based o ...

By directly analyzing brain activity, Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) allow for communication that does not rely on any muscular control and therefore constitute a possible communication channel for the completely paralyzed. Typically, the user performs d ...

We present an approach for tracking fast spatiotemporal cortical dynamics in which we combine white matter connectivity data with source-projected electroencephalographic (EEG) data. We employ the mathematical framework of graph signal processing in order ...

Objective: To study motor cortex plasticity after a period of training with a new prototype of bidirectional hand prosthesis in three left trans-radial amputees, correlating these changes with the modification of Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) in the same period. ...

Massed synchronised neuronal firing is detrimental to information processing. When networks of task-irrelevant neurons fire in unison, they mask the signal generated by task-critical neurons. On a macroscopic level, such synchronisation can contribute to a ...

Introduction Findings of recent studies indicate that it is possible to enhance cognitive capacities of healthy individuals by means of individual upper alpha neurofeedback training (NFT). Although these results are promising, most of this research was con ...

Motor imagery (MI) has been largely studied as a way to enhance motor learning and to restore motor functions. Although it is agreed that users should emphasize kinesthetic imagery during MI, recordings of MI brain patterns are not sufficiently reliable fo ...

Estimation of intracranial sources, using inverse solutions methods, has been proposed as a mean to improve performance in non-invasive brain-computer interfaces. These methods estimate the activity of a large number of neural sources from a smaller number ...

As immersive technologies target to provide higher quality of multimedia experiences, it is important to understand the quality of experience (QoE) perceived by users from various multimedia rendering schemes, in order to design and optimize human-centric ...

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) allow the user to control an external device such as a robotic arm, a cursor, or an avatar in a virtual world through the real-time decoding of brain signals and without the involvement of the musculoskeletal system. Althoug ...

Neurotechnology is the application of scientific knowledge to the practical purpose of understanding, interacting and/or repairing the brain or, in a broader sense, the nervous system. The development of novel approaches to decode functional information fr ...

Visual search is a good illustration about how the brain coordinates a variety of functions such as visual clues extraction from the scene, coordination of the eye-movements, accumu- lation of visual information and visual recognition. It has an important ...

Recent fMRI studies demonstrated that functional connectivity is altered following cognitive tasks (e.g., learning) or due to various neurological disorders. We tested whether real-time fMRI-based neurofeedback can be a tool to voluntarily reconfigure brai ...

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a system that allows a user to communicate with the environment only through cerebral activity, without using muscular output channels. To establish a direct link between the brain and a computer, the electroencephalogra ...

Resting-state functional connectivity studies with fMRI showed that the brain is intrinsically organized into large-scale functional networks for which the hemodynamic signature is stable for about 10 s. Spatial analyses of the topography of the spontaneou ...
