Fast twitch muscle fibers are prone to degradation in skeletal muscle pathologies, such as sarcopenia and muscular dystrophies. We previously showed that the exercise-induced long noncoding RNA CYTOR promotes fast-twitch myogenesis. Here, we identify an in ...

Skeletal muscle relies on resident muscle stem cells (MuSCs) for growth and repair. Aging and muscle diseases impair MuSC function, leading to stem cell exhaustion and regenerative decline that contribute to the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and ...

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) has abundant mitochondria with the unique capability of generating heat via uncoupled respiration. Here, Park et al. identify LETMD1 as a mitochondrial matrix protein enriched in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and reveal a crucial ro ...

Objective: Dysfunctional, unhealthy expansion of white adipose tissue due to excess dietary intake is a process at the root of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes development. The objective of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of the underlying ...

Diabetes impacts on brain metabolism, structure, and function. Alterations in brain metabolism have been observed in obesity and diabetes models induced by exposure to diets rich in saturated fat and/or sugar and have been linked to memory impairment. Howe ...

Targeting mitophagy to activate the recycling of faulty mitochondria during aging is a strategy to mitigate muscle decline. We present results from a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in middle-aged adults where we administer a postbiotic compound Uroli ...

Methamphetamine (METH) is a highly abused psychostimulant that is neurotoxic to dopaminergic (DAergic) nerve terminals in the striatum and increases the risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD). In vivo, METH-mediated DA release, followed by DA-mediated ...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered a health epidemic with potential devastating effects on the patients and the healthcare systems. Current preclinical models of NAFLD are invariably imperfect and generally take a lon ...

Skeletal muscle displays remarkable plasticity upon exercise and is also one of the organs most affected by aging. Despite robust evidence that aging is associated with loss of fast-twitch (type II) muscle fibers, the underlying mechanisms remain to be elu ...

Weight loss is key to controlling the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components, i.e., central obesity, hypertension, prediabetes and dyslipidaemia. The goals of our study were two-fold. First, we characterised the relationships b ...

Background: Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is an NAD(+) precursor that boosts cellular NAD(+) concentrations. Preclinical studies have shown profound metabolic health effects after NR supplementation. ...

Objective: A decay in intracellular NAD(+) levels is one of the hallmarks of physiological decline in normal tissue functions. Accordingly, dietary supplementation with NAD(+) precursors can prevent, alleviate, or even reverse multiple metabolic complicati ...

Exercising is strongly recommended for prevention and treatment of pathologies with high prevalence such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that insufficient physical activity is one of the leading ...

Genome-wide association (GWA) studies aim to dissect the relationship between genotype and phenotype. So far, the focus has been on nuclear genetic determinants as variation in the mitochondrial genome is often low in the study cohorts. Despite this observ ...

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+)) is a co-substrate for several enzymes, including the sirtuin family of NAD(+)-dependent protein deacylases. Beneficial effects of increased NAD(+) levels and sirtuin activation on mitochondrial homeostasis, organi ...

Tetrachloroethene (PCE) pollution threatens nature and human health due to its toxic and carcinogenic potential. Due to industrial activities, large amounts of PCE were discharged into the environment over the last decades and represent one of major ground ...

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an evolutionally conserved key sensor of cellular energy status. Under conditions of cellular energy stress, AMPK is activated and will switch off anabolic processes that consume ATP, while activating catabolic proces ...

Glucose is one of the most important metabolites that plays a key role in living organisms, as it is the primary energy source. Glucose metabolism is also an integral part in the pathogenesis of diabetes and cancer. Despite this tremendous impact of glucos ...

Aging is considered as a major risk factor for Parkinsonâ s disease (PD) and can be defined as a gradual decline in the ability of biological systems to efficiently renew structural and functional components, which may lead to perturbations in energetic h ...
