This work extends the range of pathways for the production of metallic microcomponents by downscaling metal casting. This is accomplished by using either of two different molding techniques, namely femtosecond laser micromachining or lithographic silicon m ...

The aluminium remelting industry relies on natural gas to transform recycled aluminium into aluminium feedstock, entailing significant atmospheric emissions. Hydric resources are also affected as they are used as sinks of waste heat from the casting proces ...

This perspective gives an overview of recent progress in thefield of photocured polymer composites based on variousforms of nanocelluloses, with a focus on cellulose nanofibrils. The manufacturing processes and performances of these nanocellulosecomposites ...

Additive manufacturing offers the opportunity to produce complex geometries from novel alloys with improved properties. Adapting conventional alloys to the process-specific properties can facilitate rapid implementation of these materials in industrial pra ...

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) exhibit excellent properties and are compatible with many shaping techniques due to the liquid character of the preceramic polymers (PCPs). Furthermore, their properties are adjustable by modifying the precursor composition ...

Laboratory three-point bending experiments are carried out to evaluate the effect of various fluids on the tensile strength of granite. The granite specimens were tested under both dry and saturated conditions. The fluids used to saturate the granite inclu ...

The quasi-brittle nature of rocks challenges the basic assumptions of linear hydraulic fracture mechanics (LHFM): namely, linear elastic fracture mechanics and smooth parallel plates lubrication fluid flow inside the propagating fracture. We relax these hy ...

The propagation of fluid driven fractures is used in a number of industrial applications (well stimulation of unconventional reservoirs, development of deep geothermal systems) but also occurs naturally (magmatic dyke intrusion). While the mechanics of hyd ...

It is well known that control specimens used to assess the concrete strength of new structures have different casting and curing conditions than those of actual structures. Notably, after pouring of the concrete and before its hardening, a number of phenom ...

New types of metamaterials and architectured material require metallic materials with precise structural design in the microscale. However, additivemanufacturing of metallic structures in themicroscale has proven difficult, as the demand for the material q ...

The use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) to lower the clinker factor of cements is now commonplace, for it benefits performance, economics and ecology. This thesis focuses on ternary blends of limestone and calcined kaolinitic clays, two very ...

Sputter deposited Al(1-x)ScxN thin films with a Sc content from x = 0 to 43 at% are investigated by electron microscopy in order to study and explain the formation and growth of abnormally oriented grains (AOG). It is found that the latter did not nucleate ...

The microstructures of alloys created via Additive Manufacturing (AM) can vary substantially from those present in cast or wrought products, due to the very rapid solidification associated with AM. While numerous studies have investigated the process-micro ...

Measurements of local strength are performed in-situ on individual silicon particles that constitute the second phase of aluminium alloy A356. Particles are shaped using Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling such that, upon the application of a compressive force ...

Mass is one of the crucial parameters for hardware that has to be placed in Earth orbit. Due to its harsh environment, a material with highest specific properties is desired to achieve space missions. The rise and development of new technologies, such as a ...

Oxide Dispersed Strengthened (ODS) ferritic stainless steels present well-known fine grains microstructures where dislocation movement is hindered by a dense precipitation of nano-oxides particles. Previous research, on the thermomechanical behavior at hig ...

To investigate the effect of recrystallization on hot deformation mechanism of TA15 titanium alloy, rolled sheet and laser-welded tubes before and after recrystallization annealing were tested by uniaxial tensile tests and biaxial gas bulging respectively. ...

In this study, the hot deformation behavior of an Al-1% Mg alloy with very coarse initial grain size was investigated in terms of flow stress evolution and grain refinement mechanism. The large grain size was employed to study the traditional continuous dy ...

The mechanical behaviour of metallic materials that have a microstructure composed of a brittle phase embedded in a ductile matrix is dictated by a complex interplay of factors such as local phase properties, cohesive properties, geometrical characteristic ...

Polycrystalline chemical vapour deposited ZnO films are commonly used as transparent electrodes for photovoltaic devices. Over the past years much effort has been put into improving their properties. Even though these films are now well optimised for speci ...
