Iron-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMAs) can be used for strengthening of existing concrete structures in civil and architectural engineering. This study investigates the recovery behavior of Fe-SMAs under varying pre-strain levels, activation temperatures ...

Accessing the low-energy non-equilibrium dynamics of materials and their polaritons with simultaneous high spatial and temporal resolution has been a bold frontier of electron microscopy in recent years. One of the main challenges lies in the ability to re ...

Damage zones exist around crustal faults, where micro- and macrocracks coexist and form a complex conduit network for fluid flow. The permeability of these zones can change rapidly as the crack network evolves during deformation. To investigate the relativ ...

Electronic structure theory plays a central role in understanding properties of crystalline materials. Among all the ab initio methods, density functional theory (DFT) is the most popular choice due to its balance between accuracy and computational cost, a ...

(Mg,Fe)O ferropericlase-magnesiow & uuml;stite has been proposed to host the majority of Earth's sodium, but the mechanism and capacity for incorporating the alkali cation remain unclear. In this work, experiments in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell and ...

Three-dimensional topological semimetals have emerged as strong candidates to probe new fundamental physical phenomena that could be exploited to develop next generation electronics. However, many aspects of their electronic properties remain unclear. Thi ...

Prismatic slip in magnesium at temperatures T

Oxide inclusions are inevitably present in steel as a direct consequence of the steelmaking process; as a result, a cubic centimetre of modern steel will generally contain about a million of these hard and brittle micrometre-sized ceramic particles. Inclus ...

The plastic deformation of small-scale face-centered cubic metals exhibits intermittent slip burst events that appear on stress-strain curves as sudden strain jumps and/or load drops. These events are generally attributed to the avalanche-like cooperative ...

The effect of equilibration time on the composition, structure and solubility of calcium aluminate silicate hydrate (C-A-S-H) was investigated in 0.5 M NaOH solutions at Al/Si = 0.1. Longer equilibration time led to longer silica chains, to less Na and, to ...

In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltag ...

The subject of the present work is discovery and in-depth characterization of a new class of functional materials. Tuning of the bond polarity and orbital occupation with a goal of establishing balance between localization and delocalization of electrons - ...

Nonlinear continuum finite element (CFE) analyses rely on accurate multiaxial constitutive law formulations along with reliable imperfection patterns for simulating nonlinear geometric instabilities in steel members under mechanical loading. Validations of ...

Copper beryllium age hardenable alloys (Cu-Be) are widely used and appreciated for combining exceptional mechanical and electrical properties. However, the toxicity of these alloys pushes the scientific community to develop alternative alloys. Cu-Ni-Sn all ...

The mechanical performance-including deformation, fracture and radiation damage-of zirconium is determined at the atomic scale. With Zr and its alloys extensively used in the nuclear industry, understanding that atomic scale behavior is crucial. The defect ...

Variant reorientation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in shape memory alloys and has a great influence on their texture and mechanical response. In the present study, a martensitic NiTi rolled sheet is investigated by the electron backscattering diffraction (EB ...

The project aims to validate some recent theoretical developments on the deformation twinning nucleation mechanism in HCP metals through small-scale mechanic experiments. To this end, a systematic investigation of the mechanical response of pure magnesium ...

Perpendicular shape anisotropy (PSA) and double magnetic tunnel junctions (DMTJs) offer practical solutions to downscale spin-transfer-torque Magnetic Random-Access Memory (STT-MRAM) beyond 20 nm technology nodes, while retaining their thermal stability an ...
