We address a simplified time-dependent parabolic problem that arises when modeling both viscoelastic fluids and elastic solids in a unified framework. A priori estimates are obtained for the continuous problem. Then implicit and semi-explicit (EVSS) time d ...

Hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for bioelectronic interfaces due to their tissue-like properties and high-water content. However, conventional hydrogels often suffer from poor electrical conductivity and mechanical stability, limiting their p ...

A Finite Element Model produced from a real WC-10wt.%Co sample is used to study the mechanical behavior of cemented carbides in compression tests. The model is obtained by slicing the sample by Focused Ion Beam and reconstructing it. This model is used to ...

Iron-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMAs) can be used for strengthening of existing concrete structures in civil and architectural engineering. This study investigates the recovery behavior of Fe-SMAs under varying pre-strain levels, activation temperatures ...

When two objects slide against each other, wear and friction occur at their interface. The accumulation of wear forms what is commonly referred to as a ``third-body''. Understanding third-body evolution has significant applications in industry, where contr ...

Surface-based inflatables are composed of two thin layers of nearly inextensible sheet material joined together along carefully selected fusing curves. During inflation, pressure forces separate the two sheets to maximize the enclosed volume. The fusing c ...

Sc-doped aluminum nitride (AlScN) allows for piezoelectric devices with large electromechanical coupling and the benefits increase with larger Sc doping in the film. However, with a larger Sc concentration, the process window narrows, and it is necessary t ...

Bending-active elastica beam is a structural configuration that is based on the elastic deformation of an initially straight beam. This deformation occurs when horizontal displacements are applied to a sliding support, causing the beam to bend into an arch ...

Background and Objective: In the current work, we present a descriptive fluid-structure interaction computational study of the end -to -side radio-cephalic arteriovenous fistula. This allows us to account for the different thicknesses and elastic propertie ...

Ultra-high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composite (UHPFRC) is a modern class of cementitious building materials. Because of its superior mechanical properties and durability, it is increasingly used globally to rehabilitate, strengthen and mod ...

This data package supports the publication 'Complexity of crack front geometry enhances toughness of brittle solids' by Xinyue Wei, Chenzhuo Li, Cían McCarthy, and John M. Kolinski Nature physics (2024) - https://doi.org/10.1038/s41567-024-02435-x DOI: 1 ...

Iron-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMA) have been used successfully in the previous years as prestressing reinforcement in the form of rebars, rods and flat strips, for various types of structural elements and loading scenarios. This paper introduces a new ...

In this thesis, we conduct a comprehensive investigation into structural instabilities of both elastic and magneto-elastic beams and shells, resulting in a creative proposal to design a programmable braille reader. Methodologically, we combine numerical si ...

Damage zones exist around crustal faults, where micro- and macrocracks coexist and form a complex conduit network for fluid flow. The permeability of these zones can change rapidly as the crack network evolves during deformation. To investigate the relativ ...

Most codes of practice adopt a semi probabilistic design approach for the dimensioning and assessment of structures. Accordingly, structural safety is ensured by performing limit state verifications using design values determined with adequately calibrated ...

Porous rocks have long been the focus of intense research driven by their importance in our society as host to our most essential resources (oil, gas, water, geothermal energy, etc), yet their rheology remains poorly understood. With increasing depth, poro ...

Kirigami, the ancient technique of paper cutting, has been successfully applied to enhance the stretchability and ductility of nanoscale graphene. However, existing experimentally realized graphene kirigami (GK) are created by introducing parallel cuts, ex ...

We introduce a computational pipeline for simulating and designing C-shells, a new class of planar-to-spatial deployable linkage structures. A C-shell is composed of curved flexible beams connected at rotational joints that can be assembled in a stress-fre ...

In this thesis, we study the mechanics of tight physical knots. Knots are omnipresent in surgery, climbing, and sailing, with disastrous consequences when the filament or the rope fails to perform its function. Even if the importance of mechanical analysis ...

We present an algorithmic approach to discover, study, and design multistable elastic knots. Elastic knots are physical realizations of closed curves embedded in 3-space. When endowed with the material thickness and bending resistance of a physical wire, t ...
