An equimolar NiCoFeCrGa high entropy alloy having dual-phase composition was studied, where the constituent phases exhibit distinct mechanical properties. Micropillars with various diameters were created from two differently heat treated samples, then they ...

Most codes of practice adopt a semi probabilistic design approach for the dimensioning and assessment of structures. Accordingly, structural safety is ensured by performing limit state verifications using design values determined with adequately calibrated ...

Iron-based shape memory alloys (Fe-SMA) have been used successfully in the previous years as prestressing reinforcement in the form of rebars, rods and flat strips, for various types of structural elements and loading scenarios. This paper introduces a new ...

Multi-material laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) is a promising approach to meet industrial demands for multifunctional components, due to its enhanced freedom of design. Copper and stainless steel are interesting materials to be combined due to the hi ...

The plastic deformation of small-scale face-centered cubic metals exhibits intermittent slip burst events that appear on stress-strain curves as sudden strain jumps and/or load drops. These events are generally attributed to the avalanche-like cooperative ...

Three-dimensional topological semimetals have emerged as strong candidates to probe new fundamental physical phenomena that could be exploited to develop next generation electronics. However, many aspects of their electronic properties remain unclear. Thi ...

This paper discusses the influence of fiber orientation on elastic limit tensile stress of ultra-high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (UHPFRC). An original model relating elastic limit tensile stress to fiber orientation is proposed, a ...

Oxide inclusions are inevitably present in steel as a direct consequence of the steelmaking process; as a result, a cubic centimetre of modern steel will generally contain about a million of these hard and brittle micrometre-sized ceramic particles. Inclus ...

Variant reorientation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in shape memory alloys and has a great influence on their texture and mechanical response. In the present study, a martensitic NiTi rolled sheet is investigated by the electron backscattering diffraction (EB ...

The project aims to validate some recent theoretical developments on the deformation twinning nucleation mechanism in HCP metals through small-scale mechanic experiments. To this end, a systematic investigation of the mechanical response of pure magnesium ...

Cu-Be alloys provide excellent electrical and mechanical properties, but present serious health hazards during manufacturing. Among alternative alloys, the Cu-Ti system has the highest yield strength; however, Ti cannot be easily solutionized at concentrat ...

Ultra-High-Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composite (UHPFRC) provides solutions to enhance existing structures and design innovative new structures. Structural UHPFRC offers 3–5 times higher compressive and tensile strengths than ordinary concre ...

The paper presents the results of an experimental work where we analyse the behaviour of an unsaturated quartz sand in a wide range of degree of saturation (from saturated to dry state). The possibility of anticipating the hydro-mechanical behaviour of the ...

Nanopores in solid state membranes are a tool able to probe nanofluidic phenomena or can act as a single molecular sensor. They also have diverse applications in filtration, desalination, or osmotic power generation. Many of these applications involve chem ...

Plastic effects during sheet metal forming can lead to undesirable distortions in formed components. Here, the three-stage work hardening and plastic strain recovery ("springback") in a cold-rolled, alpha-phase commercially pure titanium is examined. Inter ...

A multi-phase Ti-6Al-4V prepared by electron beam melting and thermal post treatments has been shown to exhibit increased strength and ductility over standard wrought or hot isostatic pressed Ti-6-Al-4V. The mechanical improvements are due to a prolonged, ...

Dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs) are flexible capacitors that convert mechanical into electrical energy. They rely on an external voltage source to charge the capacitor during each operation cycle. An alternative to this is an autonomous DEG which op ...

The thermally activated pyramidal-to-basal (PB) transition of (c + a) dislocations, transforming glissile pyramidal dissociated core structures into sessile basal dissociated ones, lies at the origin of low ductility in pure magnesium (Mg). Solute-accelera ...

Over the last few decades, ever-increasing demands of society to the built environment have continually increased consumption of energy and materials for the construction and maintenance of structures. Meanwhile, Strain Hardening Ultra High-Performance Fib ...

Age hardening induced by the formation of (semi)-coherent precipitate phases is crucial for the processing and final properties of the widely used Al-6000 alloys despite the early stages of precipitation are still far from being fully understood. This cruc ...
