Communication between the intestine and other organs such as the lungs, brain or bones is mediated by several metabolites, like short-chain fatty acids or bile acids, that relay information about nutritional and microbiota status. Bile acids are endogenous ...

Ternary-based titanium nitride (TiN) thin films have drawn attention toward rational applications due to their wear resistance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. The influence of Mo content on the structural, tribo-logical, and mechanical properties ...

Low-energy electron holography (LEEH) is one of the few techniques capable of imaging large and complex three-dimensional molecules, such as proteins, on the single molecule level at subnanometer resolution. During the imaging process, the structural infor ...

Friction and wear occur at every interface between solid materials. In the design of mechanical devices, it is desirable to be able to quantify and control the amount of friction and wear, as well as predict their evolution with time. ``Tribology'' is the ...

Diabetes impacts on brain metabolism, structure, and function. Alterations in brain metabolism have been observed in obesity and diabetes models induced by exposure to diets rich in saturated fat and/or sugar and have been linked to memory impairment. Howe ...

Optical microscopy is one widely used tool to study cell functions and the interaction of molecules at a sub-cellular level. Optical microscopy techniques can be broadly divided into two categories: partially coherent and incoherent. Coherent microscopy te ...

This work reports on the tribocorrosion properties of a CoCrMo alloy sliding under imposed passive potential against alumina in sulfuric acid-glycerol mixtures exhibiting different viscosities and thus, in principle, lubrication properties. As expected, we ...

Metabolic syndrome and diabetes impact brain function and metabolism. While it is well established that rodents exposed to diets rich in saturated fat develop brain dysfunction, contrasting results abound in the literature, likely as result of exposure to ...

Molecular imaging allows noninvasive visualization of biological processes in their native environment within living systems. It can give a better understanding of fundamental biology, help in identifying disease mechanisms and visualizing pathological tis ...

Gold coating are widely used in industry due to their corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity and low contact resistance. However, friction and wear can limit their functionality and lifetime. This study addresses the degradation of a commercial fine ...

In this work, we apply the high-resolution interference microscopy technique to investigate the intensity and phase of light transmitted through a binary phase element. Using a combination of simulation and experimental results, we identify specific featur ...

Microscopy is of high interest for biology since it allows imaging features that are too small to be seen with naked eyes. However, cells are mostly transparent to visible and infrared light which makes it difficult to see with a traditional microscope. To ...

Structural and functional imaging of cells, tissues and organisms is crucial for understanding biomedical processes. Fluorescence microscopy is an established tool and has contributed to many discoveries in the life sciences. This technique provides molecu ...

Fabrication of wear-resistant omniphobic surfaces is a persistent scientific challenge and essential for various applications such as in paint industries, fluid transport, antifouling, reduction of friction drag on ship hulls, and stain resistant textiles. ...

Quantitative phase microscopy (QPM) has recently emerged as a powerful label-free technique in the field of living cell imaging allowing to non-invasively measure with a nanometric axial sensitivity cell structure and dynamics. Since the phase retardation ...

A configurational bias Monte Carlo method has been developed to study the static friction between grafted polymers immersed in a good solvent. Simple models using the soft quadratic potential from a dissipative particle dynamics study have been used to mod ...

Microscopy imaging, including fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy, has a prominent role in life science and medical research. During the past two decades, biological imaging has undergone a revolution by way of the development of new microscopy ...

Compounds tested during drug development may have adverse effects on the heart; therefore all new chemical entities have to undergo extensive preclinical assessment for cardiac liability. Conventional intensity-based imaging techniques are not robust enoug ...

We present a variational reconstruction algorithm for the phase-retrieval problem by using the differential interference contrast microscopy. Principally, we rely on the transport-of-intensity equation that specifies the sought phase as the solution of a p ...

Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHM) is a label-free imaging technique allowing visualization of transparent cells with classical imaging cell culture plates. The quantitative DHM phase contrast image provided is related both to the intracellular refractiv ...
