The automatic design of well-performing robotic controllers is still an unsolved problem due to the inherently large parameter space and noisy, often hard-to-define performance metrics, especially when sequential tasks need to be accomplished. Distal contr ...

In recent decades, energy efficiency has become one of the key issues facing large process industries. Mounting economic, environmental and social pressure motivate energy-intensive industries to improve their efficiency. Identifying retrofit opportunities ...

This paper describes the conceptual steps in reaching the design of the AWAKE experiment currently under construction at CERN. We start with an introduction to plasma wakefield acceleration and the motivation for using proton drivers. We then describe the ...

Mumford-Shah and Potts functionals are powerful variational models for regularization which are widely used in signal and image processing; typical applications are edge-preserving denoising and segmentation. Being both non-smooth and non-convex, they are ...

We present a formalism, algorithms and tools to synthesise reactive systems that behave efficiently, i.e., which achieve an optimal trade-off between a given cost and reward model. Synthesis aims to automatically generate a program from a specification. Mo ...

Energy efficiency is a major design issue in the context of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). If the acquired data is to be sent to a far-away base station, collaborative beamforming performed by the sensors may help to distribute the communication load amon ...

The enthalpies of formation of the intermetallic compounds in the Ge-Ni binary system have been determined by calorimetric measurement and first-principles calculations. Based on the results obtained and information available in the literature, the phase d ...

In this paper we present a survey of various algorithms for computing matrix geometric means and derive new second-order optimization algorithms to compute the Karcher mean. These new algorithms are constructed using the standard definition of the Riemanni ...

We design two different strategies for computing the unknown content preferences in an online social network based on a small set of nodes in the corresponding social graph for which this information is available ahead of time. The techniques take advantag ...

The economic growth inherent to our nowadays society pushes the industries toward better performances. In the mechatronic context, the increasing competition results in more and more stringent specifications. Thus, the multiple objectives to track become h ...

The dissertation deals with closed-loop product lifecycle management (PLM) approaches for the product conceptual design improvement using gathered data during the usage period of a product. In closed-loop PLM, the data generated in each lifecycle phase can ...

A method that exploits an information theoretic framework to extract optimized audio features using video information is presented. A simple measure of mutual information (MI) between the resulting audio and video features allows the detection of the activ ...

In this paper, we review half a century of research on the design of systems displaying (physical) self-assembly of macroscopic components. We report on the experience gained in the design of 21 such systems, exhibiting components ranging from passive mech ...

In this work, we study two examples of frustrated magnetic systems whose degrees of freedom are spins (or pseudo-spins) on two-dimensional lattices. The first part presents the results obtained for the quantum compass model on a square lattice. This model ...

Approximately 25 percent of the budget for the maintenance and renewal of railway tracks is used for the switches (points) and crossings (S&C). While in the mean time the budget expenditure for the maintenance and renewal of plain track is optimized with e ...

Optimal supply chain design depends on the business context the chain caters for. In this dissertation, we are concerned with attaining and maintaining this alignment between a firm's supply chain portfolio and its business context. Following an introducti ...

Just about every other technical publication you pick up these days makes sweeping statements concerning the pressures on scientists, engineers, and industries as a whole to get to market in less time, with an improved, less expensive product. I am reminde ...

With the purpose of assessing the reactivity of chloride ions dissolved in ionic liquids (ILs), a relative scale for the solvation of chloride is given for a series of ILs based on the bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide ([Tf2N]) anion and differen ...

This thesis deals with dynamic optimization of batch processes, i.e. processes that are characterized by a finite time of operation and the frequent repetition of batches. The objective is to maximize the quantity of the desired product at final time while ...

This paper addresses the problem of choosing the best streaming policy for distortion optimal multipath video delivery, under delay constraints. The streaming policy consists in a joint selection of the video packets to be transmitted, as well as their sen ...
