Most modern in-memory online transaction processing (OLTP) engines rely on multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) to provide data consistency guarantees in the presence of conflicting data accesses. MVCC improves concurrency by generating a new version o ...

Precise exceptions are a cornerstone of modern computing as they provide the abstraction of sequential instruction execution to programmers while accommodating microarchitectural optimizations. However, increasing compute capabilities in deep memory hierar ...

Virtual Memory (VM) is a critical programming abstraction that is widely used in various modern computing platforms. With the rise of datacenter computing and birth of planet-scale online services, the semantic and capacity requirements from memory have ev ...

Classical synchronous consensus algorithms are leaderless: processes exchange their proposals, retain the maximum value and decide when they see the same choice across a couple of rounds. Indulgent consensus algorithms are more robust in that they only req ...

Micro-architectural behavior of traditional disk-based online transaction processing (OLTP) systems has been investigated extensively over the past couple of decades. Results show that traditional OLTP systems mostly under-utilize the available micro-archi ...

Disaggregated memory can address resource provisioning inefficiencies in current datacenters. Multiple software runtimes for disaggregated memory have been proposed in an attempt to make disaggregated memory practical. These systems rely on the virtual mem ...

We consider the problem of solving integer programs of the form min {c^⊺ x : Ax = b, x ∈ ℤ_{⩾ 0}}, where A is a multistage stochastic matrix in the following sense: the primal treedepth of A is bounded by a parameter d, which means that the columns of A ca ...

High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools generate hardware designs from high-level programming languages. These tools almost universally build datapaths that are controlled using a centralized controller which relies on a static, compile-time schedule to determine ...

In this thesis, we revisit classic problems in shared-memory distributed computing through the lenses of (1) emerging hardware technologies and (2) changing requirements. Our contributions consist, on the one hand, in providing a better understanding of th ...

In order to get a better understanding of the interaction of plasma microinstabilities and associated turbulence with specific modes, an antenna is implemented in the global gyrokinetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code ORB5. It consists in applying an external ...

Modern large-scale data platforms manage colossal amount of data, generated by the ever-increasing number of concurrent users. Geo-replicated and sharded key-value data stores play a central role when building such platforms. As the strongest consistency m ...

Among the different types of DRAMs, gain-cell embedded DRAM (GC-eDRAM) is a compact, low-power and CMOS-compatible alternative to conventional SRAM. GC-eDRAM achieves high memory density as it relies on a storage cell that can be implemented with as few as ...

Big science initiatives are trying to reconstruct and model the brain by attempting to simulate brain tissue at larger scales and with increasingly more biological detail than previously thought possible. The exponential growth of parallel computer perform ...

Geo-replicated data platforms are the backbone of several large-scale online services. Transactional Causal Consistency (TCC) is an attractive consistency level for building such platforms. TCC avoids many anomalies of eventual consistency, eschews the syn ...

Geo-replicated data platforms are at the backbone of several large-scale online services. Transactional Causal Consistency (TCC) is an attractive consistency level for building such platforms. TCC avoids many anomalies of eventual consistency, eschews the ...

We establish a theorem called the PCL theorem, which states that it is impossible to design a transactional memory algorithm that ensures (1) parallelism, i.e., transactions do not need to synchronize unless they access the same application objects, (2) ve ...

Many blockchain-based algorithms, such as Bitcoin, implement a decentralized asset transfer system, often referred to as a cryptocurrency. As stated in the original paper by Nakamoto, at the heart of these systems lies the problem of preventing double-spen ...

For efficient acceleration on FPGA, it is essential for external memory to match the throughput of the processing pipelines. However, the usable DRAM bandwidth decreases significantly if the access pattern causes frequent row conflicts. Memory controllers ...

With explosive growth in dataset sizes and increasing machine memory capacities, per-application memory footprints are commonly reaching into hundreds of GBs. Such huge datasets pressure the TLB, resulting in frequent misses that must be resolved through a ...

Database systems access memory either sequentially or randomly. Contrary to sequential access and despite the extensive efforts of computer architects, compiler writers, and system builders, random access to data larger than the processor cache has been s ...
