Recommendation systems play a crucial role in providing web-based suggestion utilities by leveraging user behavior, preferences, and interests. In the context of privacy concerns and the proliferation of handheld devices, federated recommender systems have ...

As computational thinking (CT) becomes increasingly acknowledged as an important skill in education, self-directed learning (SDL) emerges as a key strategy for developing this capability. The advent of generative AI (GenAI) conversational agents has disrup ...

Conversational tutoring systems (CTSs) offer a promising avenue for individualized learning support, especially in domains like persuasive writing. Although these systems have the potential to enhance the learning process, the specific role of learner cont ...

Social behaviors such as cooperation are crucial for mammals. A deeper knowledge of the neuronal mechanisms underlying cooperation can be beneficial for people suffering from pathologies with impaired social behavior. Our aim was to study the brain activit ...

Students learn more when they are actively engaged in the learning process. While hands-on activities, labs and projects are moments when students are active, the learning benefits can be amplified with coaching strategies. This activity will enable studen ...

This work studies the learning process over social networks under partial and random information sharing. In traditional social learning models, agents exchange full belief information with each other while trying to infer the true state of nature. We stud ...

The contribution of school curricula to public understanding and acceptance of evolution is still mostly unknown, due to the scarcity of studies that compare the learning goals present in different curricula. To overcome this lack of data we analysed 19 sc ...

Distributed learning is the key for enabling training of modern large-scale machine learning models, through parallelising the learning process. Collaborative learning is essential for learning from privacy-sensitive data that is distributed across various ...

The importance of psychological safety in teams has been demonstrated in different settings. Team performance improves when team climate allows team members to be their authentic selves, to ask questions and raise concerns comfortably. However, it is less ...

We link Ivancovsky et al.'s novelty-seeking model (NSM) to computational models of intrinsically motivated behavior and learning. We argue that dissociating different forms of curiosity, creativity, and memory based on the involvement of distinct intrinsic ...

Informative sample selection in an active learning (AL) setting helps a machine learning system attain optimum performance with minimum labeled samples, thus reducing annotation costs and boosting performance of computer-aided diagnosis systems in the pres ...

Dynamic aperture is an important concept for the study of non-linear beam dynamics in circular accelerators. It describes the extent of the phase-space region where a particle's motion remains bounded over a given number of turns. Understanding the feature ...

Traditional example-based learning methods are often limited by static, expert-created content. Hence, they face challenges in scalability, engagement, and effectiveness, as some learners might struggle to relate to the examples or find them relevant. To a ...

Reinforcement learning (RL) is crucial for learning to adapt to new environments. In RL, the prediction error is an important component that compares the expected and actual rewards. Dopamine plays a critical role in encoding these prediction errors. In my ...

This article reports on the current state of the OBI DICT project, a bilingual e-dictionary of oracle-bone inscriptions (OBI), incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) image recognition technology. It first provides a brief overview of the development of ...

In this thesis we explore the applications of projective geometry, a mathematical theory of the relation between 3D scenes and their 2D images, in modern learning-based computer vision systems. This is an interesting research question which contradicts the ...

Bebras tasks are considered to develop Computational Thinking (CT) and are currently used for this purpose in many studies. However, the relationship between Bebras tasks and CT is recent and, given the scarcity of validated instruments for assessing CT th ...

Human babies have a natural desire to interact with new toys and objects, through which they learn how the world around them works, e.g., that glass shatters when dropped, but a rubber ball does not. When their predictions are proven incorrect, such as whe ...

This paper lays out a case study of Software Construction, a new course in the undergraduate computer and communication sciences curriculum at EPFL. We hope to share some generalizable lessons we learned from running its first edition in Fall 2023. The cou ...

Writing high-quality procedural texts is a challenging task for many learners. While example-based learning has shown promise as a feedback approach, a limitation arises when all learners receive the same content without considering their individual input ...
