In this paper, we present metriplectic extensions of the Lie–Poisson dynamics of fluid flows over the unit annulus for both the Lebesgue [Formula: see text]-pairing and the Sobolev [Formula: see text]-pairing. Several examples are provided including 2D Nav ...

Extreme weather events are increasing in frequency in recent years due to global climate change. These events damage infrastructure and pose an open challenge to engineers to design more weather-resistant infrastructure. As engineers, we turn to nature fo ...

Hydraulic short circuit (HSC), corresponding to the simultaneous operation of the pumps and turbines, enhances the power flexibility of a pumped storage power plant (PSPP). However, comprehensive analyses are imperative to guarantee a secure and reliable o ...

Experimental results from several tokamaks suggest a strong impact of divertor density regimes on turbulent transport in the edge plasma. Reciprocally, the change in cross- field transport and Scrape-Off-Layer (SOL) width affects the access to density regi ...

The perpendicular propagation velocity of turbulent density fluctuations is an important parameter in fusion plasmas, since sheared plasma flows are crucial for reducing turbulence, and thus an essential input parameter for turbulent transport simulations. ...

Hovering insects are limited by their physiology and need to rotate their wings at the end of each back-and-forth motion to keep the wing's leading edge ahead of its trailing edge. The wing rotation at the end of each half-stroke pushes the leading edge vo ...

A new method to determine the rate of circulation fed into a leading-edge vortex (LEV) is presented for discrete-vortex methods (DVM). The strength of vortex particles shed from the leading edge is calculated based on the velocity at the shear layer, which ...

One of the key observations in the Princeton Superpipe was the late start of the logarithmic mean velocity overlap layer at a wall distance of the order of 10(3) inner units. Between y(+) approximate to 150, the start of the overlap layer in zero pressure ...

In the present paper, a new control method for tip-leakage vortex (TLV) cavitation is proposed. This method, which combines the effects of grooves and winglets, is made of overhanging grooves (OHGs) fitted at the tip of a hydrofoil. Experimental and numeri ...

A general formulation is proposed to control the integral amplification factor of harmonic disturbances in weakly non-parallel amplifier flows. The sensitivity of the local spatial stability spectrum to a base-flow modification is first determined, general ...

In this study, large-eddy simulation combined with a turbine model is used to investigate the effect of vertical wind veer associated with the Coriolis force on the structure and evolution of wind turbine wakes. In order to isolate the Coriolis effect on t ...

Large-eddy simulations (LES) are performed to simulate the atmospheric boundary-layer (ABL) flow through idealized urban canopies represented by uniform arrays of cubes in order to better understand atmospheric flow over rural-to-urban surface transitions. ...
