EC RF power sources will play a major role in the future operation of large scale tokamaks (ITER, DEMO). A 1MW/170GHz gyrotron is the standard RF power unit considered for ITER. Even though the efficiency of such devices has been significantly increased th ...

Energy balance in a power system must be maintained at all times, regardless of the variations in generation and consumption. Large Pumped Hydro Storage Plants (PHSPs) are introduced to the power system to accumulate the excess of energy during the low dem ...

Electron-Cyclotron waves are routinely used in tokamaks to heat the plasma and to drive current through the electron channel. Their unique ability to drive very localized current renders them the main foreseen tool for neoclassical tearing mode mitigation ...

CNG power system (1) comprising a storage tank (6) connected fluidically to a fuel conversion system (2) via an energy transfer system (4), the fuel conversion system (2) comprising a power unit using CNG as fuel and generating gas emissions comprising C02 ...

Nuclear fusion reactor plasmas will need to exhaust a significant proportion of energy flux through radiative processes, to enable acceptable divertor loads. This can be obtained by line radiation from impurities, injected from the plasma edge. There are h ...

Inductive power transfer technology is an attractive solution for medium voltage applications by eliminating the need for high voltage cables or wired connections in general. This paper introduces an inductive power transfer system which has multiple indep ...

Estimation of the dynamic evolution of the electron plasma density during a tokamak discharge is crucial since it directly affects the plasma performance, confinement and stability. Therefore it needs to be monitored and controlled. Knowledge of the densit ...

This paper presents techniques for evaluating the radiated power in JET disruptions. Disrupting plasmas are shown to have non-axisymmetric radiation profiles, motivating the re-evaluation of the standard techniques for calculating the total radiated power ...

SPIDER is the full scale prototype for the ITER Heating Neutral Beam source, hosted at the Neutral Beam Test Facility in Padova, Italy. The behavior of the beam must be thoroughly investigated to bring the machine's performance in line with ITER's requirem ...

The lack of freshwater in many countries pushes authorities to utilize desalination units. Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) have shown promising results to provide the power to establish a multi-generation system using hydrogen as a renewable source. In this ...

In the ITER Tokamak, four Electron Cyclotron Heating Upper Launchers (ECHUL) are needed to control plasma instabilities at the rational surfaces, most importantly the q = 3/2 and q = 2/1 neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs). Each ECHUL is equipped with a set ...

The pedestal structure, edge transport and linear MHD stability have been analyzed in a series of JET with the ITER-like wall hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) type I ELMy H-mode plasmas. The pedestal pressure is typically higher in D than in H at the same in ...

Tokamaks allow to confine fusion plasma with magnetic fields. The prediction/reconstruction of the last closed-flux surface (LCFS) is one of the primary challenges in the control of the magnetic configuration. The evolution in time of the LCFS is determine ...

Substantial power dissipation in the edge plasma is required for the safe operation of ITER and next-step fusion reactors, otherwise unmitigated heat fluxes at the divertor plasma-facing components (PFCs) would easily exceed their material limits. Traditio ...

For long-pulse tokamaks, one of the main challenges in the control strategy is to simultaneously reach multiple control objectives and to robustly handle in real-time (RT) unexpected events [off-normal-events (ONEs)] with a limited set of actuators. We hav ...

Low-carbon societies will need to store vast amounts of electricity to balance intermittent generation from wind and solar energy, for example, through frequency regulation. Here, we derive an analytical solution to the decision-making problem of storage o ...

The perpendicular propagation velocity of turbulent density fluctuations is an important parameter in fusion plasmas, since sheared plasma flows are crucial for reducing turbulence, and thus an essential input parameter for turbulent transport simulations. ...

With the advent of intelligent sensor nodes in everyday life, low power aspects of system design become more and more important. Adaptive body biasing is a promising methodology to achieve dynamic adaptation of the tradeoff between performance and energy b ...

External kink modes, believed to be the drive of the 0-limiting resistive wall mode, are strongly stabilized by the presence of a separatrix. We thus propose a novel mechanism explaining the appearance of long-wavelength global instabilities in free bounda ...

The emergence of wide-band-gap (WBG) power transistors with low conduction losses and high-speed switching speeds has paved the way for more-than-ever efficient power electronics systems and huge energy saving potentials. Likewise, power density- the ratio ...
