When viewed as an elementary particle, the electron has spin and charge. When binding to the atomic nucleus, it also acquires an angular momentum quantum number corresponding to the quantized atomic orbital it occupies. Even if electrons in solids form ban ...

Many-body interactions in crystalline solids can be conveniently described in terms of quasiparticles with strongly renormalized masses as compared with those of non-interacting particles. Examples of extreme mass renormalization are on the one hand graphe ...

Understanding and controlling the electronic structure of thin layers of quantum materials is a crucial first step towards designing heterostructures where new phases and phenomena, including the metal-insulator transition (MIT), emerge. Here, we demonstra ...

Magnetic Weyl semimetals are a newly discovered class of topological materials that may serve as a platform for exotic phenomena, such as axion insulators or the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here, we use angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and ab i ...

It has been well established experimentally that the interplay of electronic correlations and spin-orbit interactions in Ir4+ and Ir5+ oxides results in insulating J(eff) = 1/2 and J(eff) = 0 ground states, respectively. However, in compounds where the str ...

The resolution of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) in three-dimensional (3D) momentum k is fundamentally limited by ill defined surface-perpendicular wave vector k(perpendicular to) associated with the finite photoelectron mean free path. ...

The high-T-c cuprate superconductors are close to antiferromagnetic order. Recent measurements of magnetic excitations have reported an intriguing similarity to the spin wavesmagnons- of the antiferromagnetic insulating parent compounds, suggesting that ma ...

We studied the magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional (q-1D) ladder subsystem of Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 (SCCO) using Cu L-3-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). By comparing momentum-resolved RIXS spectra with high (x = 12.2) and without ( ...

One-dimensional (1D) magnetic insulators have attracted significant interest as a platform for studying quasiparticle fractionalization, quantum criticality, and emergent phenomena. The spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with antiferromagnetic nearest neighbour int ...

We present a study of the resonant inelastic scattering response of YbInCu4 excited at the tender YbM5 x-ray edge. In the high-temperature, paramagnetic phase, we observe a multiplet structure which can be understood at an ionic level. Upon cooling through ...

1T-TiSe2 is a quasi-two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide, which exhibits a charge density wave transition at a critical temperature of similar to 200 K as well as low-temperature superconductivity induced by pressure or intercalation. The electr ...

We measured the high-resolution Cu L-3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) of undoped cuprates La2CuO4, Sr2CuO2Cl2, CaCuO2 and NdBa2Cu3O6. The dominant spectral features were assigned to dd excitations and we extensively studied their polarizat ...

We present a combined oxygen K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the bilayer ruthenate Ca3Ru2O7. Our RIXS experiments on Ca3Ru2O7 were carried out on the overlapping planar and interplanar oxygen res ...

Using low-energy projection of the one-band t-t′-t′′ Hubbard model we derive an effective spin Hamiltonian and its spin-wave expansion to order 1/S. We fit the spin-wave dispersion of several parent compounds to the high-temperature superconducting cuprate ...

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in the soft x-ray regime has been profiting much from technical advances that have lowered considerably the instrumental linewidth. At the ADRESS beam line of the Swiss Light Source the SAXES spectrometer can be used to ...

We measured the momentum dependence of magnetic excitations in the model spin-1/2 2D antiferromagnetic insulator Sr2CuO2Cl2 (SCOC). We identify a single-spin-wave feature and a multimagnon continuum, with different polarization dependences. The spin waves ...

Explaining the mechanism of superconductivity in the high-T-c cuprates requires an understanding of what causes electrons to form Cooper pairs. Pairing can be mediated by phonons, the screened Coulomb force, spin or charge fluctuations, excitons, or by a c ...

We present a 5 m long spectrometer for soft x rays to be used at a synchrotron radiation beamline for resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in the 400-1600 eV energy range. It is based on a variable line spacing spher ...

The concepts and technical realisation of the high-resolution soft X-ray beamline ADRESS operating in the energy range from 300 to 1600 eV and intended for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (R1XS) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectioscopy (ARPES) are ...

The important source of interface conductivity in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures, the Ti 3d carriers, is probed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ti 2p(3/2) edge of epitaxially grown superlattices. We reveal unambiguously the generation of bo ...
