Vocal signalling systems, as used by humans and various non-human animals, exhibit discrete and continuous properties that can naturally be used to express discrete and continuous information, such as distinct words to denote objects in the world and proso ...

Music can be interpreted by attributing syntactic relationships to sequential musical events, and, computationally, such musical interpretation represents an analogous combinatorial task to syntactic processing in language. While this perspective has been ...

Music is hierarchically structured, both in how it is perceived by listeners and how it is composed. Such structure can be elegantly captured using probabilistic grammatical models similar to those used to study natural language. They address the complexit ...

Voice leading is considered to play an important role in the structure of Western tonal music. However, the explicit voice assignment of a piece (if present at all) generally does not reflect all phenomena related to voice leading. Instead, voice-leading p ...

Becoming a practical musician traditionally requires an extensive amount of preparatory work to master the technical and theoretical challenges of the particular instrument and musical style before being able to devote oneself to musical expression. In par ...

This corpus of annotated MuseScore files has been created within the DCML corpus initiative and employs the DCML harmony annotation standard. It is one out of nine similar corpora that have been grouped together to An Annotated Corpus of Tonal Piano Music ...

This paper models predictive processing of chords using a corpus of Ludwig van Beethoven’s string quartets. A recently published dataset consisting of expert harmonic analyses of all Beethoven string quartets was used to evaluate an n-gram language model a ...

In Western tonal music, voice leading (VL) and harmony are two central concepts influencing whether a musical sequence is perceived as well-formed. However, experimental studies have primarily focused on the effect of harmony on the cognitive processing of ...

This paper studies the "integration" problem of nineteenth- century harmony the question whether the novel chromatic chord transitions in this time are a radical break from or a natural extension of the conventional diatonic system. We examine the connecti ...

Diachronic stylistic changes in music are to a large extent affected by composers' different choices, for example regarding the usage of tones, intervals, and harmonies. Analyzing the tonal content of pieces of music and observing them over time is thus in ...

The Python library ms3 makes scores (symbolic representations of music) operational for computational approaches by representing their contents as sets of tabular files. Music scores represent relations between sounding events by graphical means. The Free ...

Music analysis, in particular harmonic analysis, is concerned with the way pitches are organized in pieces of music, and a range of empirical applications have been developed, for example, for chord recognition or key finding. Naturally, these approaches r ...

Chord detection is the task of assigning chord labels to segments of an input musical piece. The labels are typically drawn from a pre-defined vocabulary in which each symbol comprises at least a root pitch and a chord quality. In this paper, we introduce ...

Aligning versions of the same source material has been a persistent challenge in the field of digital libraries for musicology, and a barrier to progress. The growing number of publicly accessible symbolic datasets (of scores, analyses, and more) now incre ...

While theoretical and empirical insights suggest that the capacity to represent and process complex syntax is crucial in language as well as other domains, it is still unclear whether specific parsing mechanisms are also shared across domains. Focusing on ...

Extended tonality is a central system that characterizes the music from the 19th up to the 21st century, including styles like popular music, film music or Jazz. Developing from classical major-minor tonality, the harmonic language of extended tonality for ...

How are listeners able to follow and enjoy complex pieces of music? Several theoretical frameworks suggest links between the process of listening and the formal structure of music, involving a division of the musical surface into structural units at multip ...
