The transition towards clean renewable energy sources, where wind and solar are prone to variation, requires adequate energy storage. Power-to-methane (PtM) systems can be part of the solution. Specifically, solid-oxide-electrolyser (SOE) based PtM systems ...

The traditional pathway of electrolysis based power-to-methane systems consists of water (liquid or vapor) electrolysis followed by CO2 methanation. The use of solid-oxide electrolysers allows an alternative pathway, i.e., steam and CO2 electrolysis follow ...

The one-dimensional transient numerical code of JJ Cooling Innovation has been significantly improved to simulate the thermal/hydraulic performance of pulsating heat pipes (PHPs). Using a mechanistic approach, the liquid slug and vapor plug flows and their ...

The increasing penetration of variable renewable energies poses new challenges for grid management. The economic feasibility of grid-balancing plants may be limited by low annual operating hours if they work either only for power generation or only for pow ...

Reversible solid oxide cells (rSOC) can convert excess electricity to valuable fuels in electrolysis cell mode (SOEC) and reverse the reaction in fuel cell mode (SOFC). In this work, a five - cell rSOC short stack, integrating fuel electrode (Ni-YSZ) suppo ...

Biogas-fed solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology based on Ni-GDC electrolyte-supported cell (ESC) offers a sustainable solution for European farms’ heat and power demands with superior efficiency. However, the understanding of the degradation and recover ...

The power-to-methane process using a solid-oxide electrolyser, followed by an exothermic methanation reactor, is effective for the production of an energy carrier (synthesis methane) that can be readily stored and transported at a large scale. A significan ...

In recent years, biogas-fed solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology based on Ni-GDC electrolyte-supported cell has attracted interests due to its high sulfur tolerance. However, the degradation and recovery behavior of the cells under exposure to common su ...

Online performance characterization and faulty condition diagnosis of micro-combined-heat-and-power (μ-CHP) solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system is crucial for ensuring safe in-house operation and lifespan prolongation. However, fast accurate detection of f ...

The pulsating nature of a closed loop pulsating heat pipe (CLPHP) makes the prediction of its thermal-hydraulic performance extremely challenging. Unfortunately, the design of CLPHPs is still quite an empirical process, requiring testing of many prototypes ...

Due to the local pulsating/transient nature and complex thermal-hydraulic coupling of a closed loop pulsating heat pipe (CLPHP), there is a need to develop an effective simulation code capable to design and predict the local and overall thermal performance ...

The deployment of renewable energy systems has been increasing steadily in recent years. The intermittency associated with the renewable electricity supply can be addressed through the usage of energy storage and release systems. In this framework, reversi ...

Operating the cooling system of a methanation reactor using an open-loop two-phase thermosiphon with evaporating water as the cooling liquid is an effective way to ensure safe operation as it does not rely on a recirculating pump. The aim of the reactor de ...
