Electrochemical liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a unique technique for probing nanocatalyst behavior during operation for a range of different electrocatalytic processes, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution r ...

In situ scanning transmission electron microscopy enables observation of the domain dynamics in ferroelectric materials as a function of externally applied bias and temperature. The resultant data sets contain a wealth of information on polarization switch ...

Perovskites have been widely studied for electrocatalysis due to the exceptional activity they exhibit for surface-mediated redox reactions. To date, descriptors based on density functional theory calculations or experimental measurements have assumed a bu ...

To improve mass transport limitations in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), a detailed analysis of the gas diffusion layer structure can aid to understand the transport processes of oxygen to the catalyst layer and the liquid water removal mecha ...

The value of operando and in situ characterization methodologies for understanding electrochemical systems under operation can be inferred from the upsurge of studies that have reported mechanistic insights into electrocatalytic processes based on such mea ...

Electrochemical liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is showing excellent promise in fundamental studies of energy-related processes including lithium-ion battery (LIB) cycling. A key requirement to accurately interpret the measurements and ...

Size, morphology, and surface sites of electrocatalysts have a major impact on their performance. Understanding how, when, and why these parameters change under operating conditions is of importance for designing stable, active, and selective catalysts. He ...

Phosphorene is a mono-elemental, two-dimensional (2D) substance with outstanding, highly directional properties and a bandgap that depends on the number of layers of the material(1-8). Nanoribbons, meanwhile, combine the flexibility and unidirectional prop ...

Analysis of the temperature- and stimulus-dependent imaging data toward elucidation of the physical transformations is an ubiquitous problem in multiple fields. Here, temperature-induced phase transition in BaTiO3 is explored using the machine learning ana ...

Catalyst layers in proton exchange membrane fuel cells consist of platinum-group-metal nanocatalysts supported on carbon aggregates, forming a porous structure through which an ionomer network percolates. The local structural character of these heterogeneo ...

Phosphorene nanoribbons (PNRs) have been widely predicted to exhibit a range of superlative functional properties; however, because they have only recently been isolated, these properties are yet to be shown to translate to improved performance in any appl ...

Among the perovskites used to catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCF) exhibits excellent activity which is thought to be related to dynamic reconstruction at the flexible perovskite surface due to accommodation of ...

Ferroelectric materials, upon electric field biasing, display polarization discontinuities known as Barkhausen jumps, a subclass of a more general phenomenon known as crackling noise. Herein, we follow at the nanoscale the motion of 90 degree needle domain ...

A multi-modal and multi-scale non-local means (M3S-NLM) method is proposed to extract atomically resolved spectroscopic maps from low signal-to-noise (SNR) datasets recorded with a transmission electron microscope. This method improves upon previously test ...

A microporous layer (MPL) is typically added to the gas diffusion layer of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) to promote cell performance and water management. The transport mechanism of the water through the MPL is, however, not well understood due to ...

The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of performance degrading mechanisms occurring when a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEM-WE) is coupled with renewable energies, where times of operation and idle periods alternate. An ...

Complex oxides show extreme sensitivity to structural distortions and defects, and the intricate balance of competing interactions which emerge at atomically defined interfaces may give rise to unexpected physics. In the interfaces of non-magnetic complex ...

Achieving an efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an acidic or neutral medium is of paramount importance for hydrogen production via proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEM-WE). Supported iridium-based nanoparticles (NPs) are th ...

A long-standing problem in the application of solid-state nanopores is the lack of the precise control over the geometry of artificially formed pores compared to the well-defined geometry in their biological counterpart, that is, protein nanopores. To date ...

Ni- and Co-based catalysts with added Fe demonstrate promising activity in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during alkaline water electrolysis, with the presence of Fe in a certain quantity being crucial for their enhanced performance. The mode of incor ...
