Aseismic crack growth upon activation of fault slip due to fluid injection may or may not lead to the nucleation of a dynamic rupture depending on in-situ conditions, frictional properties of the fault and the value of overpressure. In particular, a fault ...

Summary Fault systems have geometrically complex structures in nature, such as stepovers, bends, branches, and roughness. Many geological and geophysical studies have shown that the geometrical complexity of fault systems in nature decisively influences th ...

We investigate the growth of an axisymmetric hydraulic fracture in an impermeable quasi-brittle material accounting for the presence of a fluid lag. The process zone is simulated using a linear softening cohesive zone model and is characterized by an incre ...

The proper computation of the time evolution of the fracture front is the main challenge of three-dimensional (3D) hydraulic fracture growth simulation. We discuss explicit and implicit variants of a hydraulic fracture propagation scheme based on a level s ...

This upload contains the relevant scripts, notebooks, and datasets to reproduce the numerically obtained results of the Journal article "Three-dimensional buoyant hydraulic fractures: finite volume release" by Möri and Lecampion, (2023). ...

This study observed hydraulic fracture propagation, arrest, and closure in permeable rocks. The experiment was conducted on a Molasse sandstone block in a true triaxial state of stress. The study monitored fracture opening at the wellbore and fluid pressur ...

Sedimentary rocks often exhibit a transverse isotropy due to fine scale layering. We investigate the effect of the anisotropy of fracture toughness on the propagation of a planar 3D hydraulic fracture perpendicular to the isotropy plane: a configuration co ...

We investigate the growth of a hydraulic fracture assuming a power-law dependence of material toughness with fracture length for plane strain and radial geometries. Such a toughness fracture length dependence models in a simple manner a toughening mechanis ...

We detail the energy balance of a propagating hydraulic fracture. Using the linear hydraulic fracture model which combines lubrication flow and linear elastic fracture mechanics, we demonstrate how different propagation regimes are related to the dominance ...

We reply to Prof. Linkov comments on our article entitled "Explicit versus implicit front advancing schemes for the simulation of hydraulic fracture growth" (Int. J. Numer. Anal. Methods Geomech., 2019, 43 (6), 1300-1315). We present additional results ind ...

In this contribution, we explore different aspects of the multi-stage fracturing process such as stress interaction between growing hydraulic fractures, perforation and near-wellbore tortuosity effects as well as the wellbore flow dynamics using a fit-for- ...

Fault surfaces are rough at all scales, this significantly affecting fault-slip behaviour. However, roughness is only occasionally considered experimentally and then often in experiments imposing a low slip velocity, corresponding to the initiation stage o ...

Fluid driven fractures propagate in the upper earth crust either naturally or in response to engineeredfluid injections. The quantitative prediction of their evolution is critical in order to better understandtheir dynamics as well as to optimize their cre ...

A viscous, lubrication-like response can be triggered in a thin film of fluid squeezed between a rigid flat surface and the tip of an incoming projectile. We develop a scaling for this viscous approach stage of fluid-mediated normal impact, applicable to s ...

High injection rate hydraulic fracturing can have Reynolds number as high as 10000. For such high Reynolds numbers, turbulent flow is likely to occur. In this paper, we investigate the effect of turbulence on the propagation of hight contained hydraulic fr ...
