Depending on the type of fracture propagation regime when the injection stops, the closure of the fracture may occur exactly after the injection ceases, in the case where the fracturing process is dominated by fracture energy, or the fracture propagate for ...

Robustness to formation geological heterogeneities of the limited entry technique for multi-stage fracturing of horizontal wells is investigated. It is necessary to simulate the complete process of initiation and propagation of multiple hydraulic fractures ...

Development of numerical methods for hydraulic fracture simulation has accelerated in the past two decades. Recent advances in hydraulic fracture modeling and simulation are driven by increased industry and research activity in oil and gas, a drive toward ...

Induced seismicity caused by anthropogenic modification of the subsurface effective stress state has been observed in a number of industrial applications -- from hydrocarbon extraction (e.g., Groningen [1]), drilling waste-water disposal (e.g., [2]) to the ...

We investigate the propagation of fluid-driven fault slip on a slip-weakening frictional interface separating two identical half-spaces of a three-dimensional elastic solid. Our focus is on axisymmetric circular shear ruptures as they capture the most esse ...

We quantify the importance of turbulent flow on the propagation of hydraulic fractures (HF) accounting for the addition of friction reducing agents to the fracturing fluid (slickwater fluid). The addition in small quantities of a high molecular weight poly ...

Laboratory experiments have been carried out to investigate the growth of hydraulic fracture (HF) in an anisotropic rock with pre-existing discontinuities such as bedding planes and veins. The experiments are designed in light of scaling relationships that ...

Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring is a useful technique to monitor the health of a structure continuously, helping to prevent potential failure. AE are elastic waves produced and emitted during fracture processes inside a material and are recorded by senso ...

We investigate the problem of simultaneous propagation of multiple hydraulic fractures in situations when the effect of buoyancy is important. While such fractures often occur in nature as magmatic dikes, they also bear technological relevance. For instanc ...

Fluid injections can induce aseismic slip, resulting in stress changes that may propagate faster than pore pressure diffusion, potentially triggering seismicity at substantial distances from injection wells. Constraining the maximum extent of these aseismi ...

This upload contains the relevant scripts, notebooks, and datasets to reproduce the numerically obtained results of the Journal article "Three-dimensional buoyant hydraulic fracture growth: constant release from a point source" by Möri and Lecampion, (2022 ...

We explore different aspects of the multi-stage fracturing process such as stress interaction between growing hydraulic fractures, perforation friction, as well as the wellbore flow dynamics using a specifically developed numerical solver. In particular, g ...

Hydraulic fractures are used to enhance the hydrocarbon production from low permeability rocks and to measure the minimum in-situ principal stress in rock formations. In these cases, the fracture growth above (or below) the formation of interest is a key m ...

4-D acoustic imaging via an array of 32 sources/32 receivers is used to monitor hydraulic fracture (HF) propagating in a 250 mm cubic specimen under a true-triaxial state of stress. We present a method based on the arrivals of diffracted waves to reconstru ...

We investigate two hydraulic stimulation stages performed in April 2022 at the Utah FORGE enhanced geothermal system test site using analytical solutions and numerical modeling of fluid-induced tensile and shear rupture problems. These stimulation stages d ...

Despite ongoing engineering efforts, unconventional horizontal gas wells completed with the multi-stage hydraulic fracturing technique are not yet producing to their full potential, as a meaningful proportion of clusters are producing marginally - if at al ...

At the early stage of hydraulic fracture growth, the fluid may lag behind the fracture front. We report three hydraulic fracture experiments performed in rocks (gabbro and marble) under conditions promoting an important fluid lag (low confining stress, lar ...

Laboratory experiments have been conducted on anisotropic slate specimens to study the behavior of hydraulic fractures (HFs) when encountering discontinuities. The experiments target specific propagation regimes, including toughness-dominated, lag-viscosit ...

This is the experimental data used in manuscript: "Rock anisotropy promotes hydraulic fracture containment at depth". This data set has 5 folders: K1, T2, M3 and M4 contain the raw data collected by active acoustic monitoring system and various pumps and t ...

We investigate the conditions for the local arrest of a hydraulic fracture encountering a region of larger toughness. The propagation of a hydraulic fracture strongly depends on the ratio between the energy dissipated in the creation of new fracture surfac ...
