The configuration of a hydraulic fracture (HF) propagating perpendicular to the isotropy plane of a transversely isotropic (TI) material is encountered in most sedimentary basins. We account for both elastic and fracture toughness anisotropy, and investiga ...

Seasonal storage of thermal energy has the potential to both significantly reduce the total energy requirements for heating and cooling of buildings, and also allow for the flexibility to store thermal energy from intermittent sources. With approximately h ...

We investigate the propagation and arrest of a radial hydraulic fracture upon the end of the injection. Depending on the regime of propagation at the time of shut-in of the injection, excess elastic energy may be stored in the surrounding medium. Once the ...

We investigate the problem of fluid injection at constant pressure in a 2D Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) with randomly oriented and uniformly distributed frictionally-stable fractures. We show that this problem shares similarities with the simpler scenar ...

We investigate the quasi-static growth of a fluid-driven frictional shear crack that propagates in mixed mode (II+III) on a planar fault interface that separates two identical half-spaces of a three-dimensional solid. The fault interface is characterized b ...

We present a numerical method for the solution of nonlinear geomechanical problems involving localized deformation along shear bands and fractures. We leverage the boundary element method to solve for the quasi-static elastic deformation of the medium whil ...

Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring is commonly used to inspect the health of a structure continuously. During fracture processes elastic waves of AE are created and emitted, and sensors can capture these waves. The acquired signals can be processed to track ...

This study investigates experimentally hydraulic fracture propagation, arrest and closure in permeable rocks.Through a controlled laboratory experiment on a Molasse sandstone block under a true triaxial state of stress, hydraulic fracture propagation and c ...

We use the Carreau rheological model which properly accounts for the shear-thinning behaviour between the low and high shear rate Newtonian limits to investigate the problem of a semi-infinite hydraulic fracture propagating at a constant velocity in an imp ...

We investigate the case of a hydraulic fracture (HF) propagating perpendicular to the isotropy plane of a transversely isotropic material: a relevant configuration for the growth of HFs in sedimentary rocks where fractures are propagating vertically across ...

The quasi-brittle nature of rocks challenges the basic assumptions of linear hydraulic fracture mechanics (LHFM): namely, linear elastic fracture mechanics and smooth parallel plates lubrication fluid flow inside the propagating fracture. We relax these hy ...

Hydraulic fracturing (HF) treatments can form widespread fractures. Understanding their containment at depth is critical, given the positive buoyancy contrast between the fracturing fluid and the surrounding rock, promoting upward growth. We study arrest m ...

In this paper, we introduce a novel automated and high-precision acoustic emission (AE) monitoring algorithm and the software SIMORGH, which is suitable for structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil structures. Initially developed for laboratory-scale hy ...

Injection-induced aseismic slip plays an important role in a broad range of human-made and natural systems, from the exploitation of geo-resources to the understanding of earthquakes. Recent studies have shed light on how aseismic slip propagates in respon ...

We present a laboratory setup to test the energy budget of underground heat storage in an otherwise impermeable rock through engineered fractures, a so-called Fracture Thermal Energy Storage (FTES) system. A hydraulic fracture is first created in a cubic s ...

We combine active and passive acoustic measurements to improve the spatio- temporal imaging of hydraulic fracture growth performed under true triaxial confinement in the laboratory. 64 active piezo-electric transducers (54 P waves, 10 S waves) work in sour ...

We model transient diffusion in heterogeneous materials using a novel physics-informed neural networks framework (PINNs) termed Adaptive interface physics-informed neural networks or AdaI-PINNs (Roy et al. arXiv preprint arXiv:2406.04626, 2024). AdaI-PINNs ...

We investigate the fluid-driven growth of a shear crack along a frictional discontinuity and its transition to hydraulic fracturing (sometimes referred to as hydraulic jacking) under plane-strain conditions. We focus on the case of a constant friction coef ...

We study the propagation of a plane‐strain hydraulic fracture driven by a shear thinning fluid following a Carreau rheology. We restrict to the impermeable medium case and quantify in details the impact on fracture growth of the shear‐thinning properties o ...

In our study, we investigated the impact of changes in Mode I fracture toughness and stress barriers on fully developed planar, buoyant hydraulic fractures assuming linear elastic hydraulic fracture mechanics. We present scaling-based arguments to predict ...
