In the past few years, laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) of high entropy alloys (HEAs) has gained significant interest. We investigated a HEA (PdPtRhIrCuNi) elaborated by LPBF, and studied its microstructure and mechanical properties. This alloy has potential ...

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are high-strength, highly elastic materials due to their disordered atomic structure. Because BMGs require sufficiently high cooling rates to bypass crystallization, laser-based additive manufacturing (AM) methods have recently ...

An extruded Mg-6Gd-3Y alloy was processed by 6 passes of simple shear extrusion (SSE) at 553 K to refine the microstructure. The microstructural studies were performed through electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) and also transmission electron micros ...

A new combination of laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM) and electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) with a field-emission scanning electron microscope (SEM) is utilized to study the mechanism of bainite transformation in reheated low carbon baini ...

Variant selection is commonly observed in martensitic steels when a stress is applied to the material during transformation. Classically, the selection phenomenon is modelled considering the work of the shape strain in the applied stress field. This shape ...

The neutron time-of-flight (n_TOF) facility at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) is a pulsed white-spectrum neutron spallation source producing neutrons for two experimental areas: the Experimental Area 1 (EAR1), located 185 m horizontall ...

The versatility and flexibility in laser-based layer-wise additive manufacturing processes allow for the fabrication of metallic parts with tailorable mechanical properties. Interest in microstructure control during the process has led to varying applicati ...

The paper describes a new approach in controlling and tailoring residual stress profile of parts made bySelective Laser Melting (SLM). SLM parts are well known for the high tensile stresses in the as – built statein the surface or subsurface region. These ...

Additive manufacturing of 316L/CuCrZr multi-material metallic structures has recently attracted significant attention, due to the ideal combination of structural and thermal/electrical properties. In this work, a unique multi-phase microstructure was produ ...

This study investigates various cracking mechanisms and their prevalence in fusion processing of steel-copper multi-materials using operando X-ray diffraction and imaging during laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) of 316L-CuCrZr multi-material. During this inve ...

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) or Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is the most studied laser-based additive manufacturing process for metals and alloys. One important issue in SLM is the time-consuming identification of a process window leading to quasi full ...

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a bottom-up manufacturing technique using a high-energy laser to selectively melt metallic alloys, enabling the creation of complex microstructures. While rapid cooling rates and process stochasticity can lead to unpredict ...

A crucial criterion for the quality of the additively manufactured parts is the porosity content for achieving an acceptable final relative density. In addition, for jewelry applications, visible pores are unacceptable at or in the vicinity of the surface. ...

As-built Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) Ti-6Al-4V typically exhibits a fully acicular alpha '-martensite microstructure, and requires post-process heat treatment in order to decompose the martensite and achieve sufficient ductility. In the present study, w ...

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) of Ni-based superalloys such as CM247LC is prone to weld-cracking. This paper investigates how to suppress cracks by repeatedly applying Laser Shock Peening (LSP) during the building phase of SLM. Samples made of CM247LC were ...

The influence of secondary phase particles on grain growth (Zener pinning) is simulated in two dimensions using a level set method. Several simulations with circular particles are performed to study the influence of particle surface fraction and distributi ...

Laser powder bed fusion is an additive manufacturing technique extensively used for the production of metallic components. Despite this process has reached a status at which parts are produced with mechanical properties comparable to those from conventiona ...

The microstructure evolution associated with the cold forming sequence of an Fe-14Cr-1W-0.3Ti-0.3Y2O3 grade ferritic stainless steel strengthened by dispersion of nano oxides (ODS) was investigated. The material, initially hot extruded at 1100 degrees C an ...

Copper beryllium age hardenable alloys (Cu-Be) are widely used and appreciated for combining exceptional mechanical and electrical properties. However, the toxicity of these alloys pushes the scientific community to develop alternative alloys. Cu-Ni-Sn all ...

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) as an additive manufacturing (AM) technology has emerged as a powerful platform for producing multi-material metallic structures. The main drawbacks of using metallic powders for multi-material printing are related to technic ...
