Cu-Be alloys provide excellent electrical and mechanical properties, but present serious health hazards during manufacturing. Among alternative alloys, the Cu-Ti system has the highest yield strength; however, Ti cannot be easily solutionized at concentrat ...

G115 steel has gained a growing interesting recently for its use in next-generation ultra-supercritical power plant applications. Due to the high densities of dislocations and lath martensite boundaries in G115 steel, interactions between solutes and dislo ...

The production of high stiffness Ti-based Metal Matrix Composites (Ti-MMCs) displaying significant ductility is extremely challenging due to the high reinforcement content required. This study outlines the production process of stiffness-driven Ti-TiC MMCs ...

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a metal additive manufacturing technique involving complex interplays between vapor, liquid, and solid phases. Despite LPBF's advantageous capabilities compared to conventional manufacturing methods, the underlying physica ...

An SEM in situ uniaxial tensile testing setup allowing HR-EBSD acquisition during deformation was used to study the extension twinning mechanism in magnesium(Mg) at the micron scale. Structures were fabricated with two different crystal orientations, respe ...

Two severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques of simple shear extrusion (SSE) and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were employed to process an extruded Mg -6Gd -3Y -1.5Ag (wt%) alloy at 553 K for 1, 2, 4 and 6 passes. The microstructural evolutions ...

Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) often takes place during hot deformation of metallic materials, which then exerts significant influence on the final microstructures and mechanical properties of the formed components. A considerable number of published pape ...

The major challenge to overcome when processing metallic glasses (MGs) is to avoid crystallization. Therefore, time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagrams are used, but they are often derived from experiments in which heating or cooling rates are limite ...

Metallic parts made by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) are known for their heterogeneous microstructures in the as-built (AB) state. In this paper, Laser Shock Peening (ISP) was performed on a 316 L stainless steel part fabricated by SLM. The LSP treatment i ...

Variant reorientation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in shape memory alloys and has a great influence on their texture and mechanical response. In the present study, a martensitic NiTi rolled sheet is investigated by the electron backscattering diffraction (EB ...

Concurrent precipitation in an age hardenable aluminum alloy determines recrystallization behavior especially grains structure and recrystallization texture during continuous heating. In this study, to investigate the effect of concurrent precipitation on ...

Titanium-based Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) manufactured by additive manufacturing offer tremendous lightweighting opportunities. However, processing the high reinforcement contents needed to substantially improve elastic modulus while conserving signifi ...

An extruded Mg-6Gd3Y-0.5Ag magnesium alloy was processed by the simple shear extrusion (SSE) technique at 553 K for 1, 2, 4 and 6 passes to refine the microstructure. The electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis was used to investigate the micro ...

One of the major drawbacks of selective laser melting (SLM) is the accumulation of tensile residual stresses (TRS) in the surface and subsurface zones of produced parts which can lead to cracking, delamination, geometrical distortions, and a decrease in fa ...

It is established that the annealing twin boundaries of austenite act as nucleation sites for the martensitic transformation. In the present study, we observe that in surface martensite the transformation only takes place for twin boundaries that are appro ...

Dynamic and post-dynamic recrystallization kinetics were investigated during hot-working of Inconel 718 as a function of temperature, strain and strain rate in the single phase domain. The post-dynamic evolution was found to be extremely fast and impacting s ...

Samples from an ultrafine-grained Cu-4.5vol.%Al2O3 nanocomposite rod fabricated by powder compact extrusion were annealed at 400 and 700 degrees C for 15 min respectively, and their microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. It shows that ...

The features of a (body-centered cubic) structures were investigated in a low-carbon multicomponent alloy from morphological and crystallographic perspectives. In addition to apparent features of granular bainite and lamellar martensite, a morphological si ...

Dynamic recrystallization helps to refine grain structures in metals and tune their properties. Confining recrystallization within prior nanoscale twinning provides a path for reaching exceptional grain refinement. ...

Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMG) are metallic alloys that have the ability to solidify in an amorphous state. BMGs show enhanced properties, for instance, high hardness, strength, and excellent corrosion and wear resistance. BMGs produced by conventional method ...
