Nature produces soft materials with fascinating combinations of mechanical properties. For example, the mussel byssus embodies a combination of stiffness and toughness, a feature that is unmatched by synthetic hydrogels. Key to enabling these excellent mec ...

The properties of clusters of colloidal particles, often termed supraparticles, are determined by the arrangement of the primary particles. Therefore, controlling the structure formation process is of key importance. While buckled morphologies can result f ...

Under ambient conditions, marine organisms are able to synthesize a variety of functional materials, ranging from eye lenses to protective shells through the meticulous control over magnesium incorporation into calcite during its crystallization. The mecha ...

Metal nanoparticles are frequently employed for the colorimetric detection of specific target molecules using an aggregation-induced shift of the localized surface plasmon resonance. However, metal nanoparticles dispersed in bulk solutions are prone to be ...

Recent developments in soft actuation demand for resilient, responsive materials with locally varying compositions that are sufficiently stiff to exhibit significant actuation forces. Hydrogels are inherently responsive to certain stimuli. Yet, they typica ...

Devices and methods for dividing droplets are generally described. In some embodiments, an article may comprise a fluidic channel comprising an array of obstructions. In certain embodiments, the arrangement of obstructions in the array may affect the flow ...

Double emulsion drops are well-suited templates to produce capsules whose dimensions can be conveniently tuned by adjusting those of the drops. To closely control the release kinetics of encapsulants, the composition and thickness of the capsule shell must ...

The coevolution of hydrogen and oxygen during photocatalytic water splitting presents a challenge for efficient product separation. Here, we demonstrate membrane-free, drop-based photocatalytic water splitting with inherent product separation and competiti ...

The bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs strongly increases if they are formulated as amorphous materials because the solubility of the amorphous phase is much higher than that of the crystal. Moreover, the stability of these particles against crystallizat ...

The stiffness and toughness of conventional hydrogels decrease with increasing degree of swelling. This behavior makes the stiffness-toughness compromise inherent to hydrogels even more limiting for fully swollen ones, especially for load-bearing applicati ...

Single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) has revolutionized biomedical research by enabling the in-depth analysis of cell-to-cell heterogeneity of tissues with unprecedented resolution. One of the catalyzing technologies is single cell droplet microfluidics, ...

Horizontal black lipid membranes (BLMs) enable optical microscopy to be combined with the electrophysiological measurements for studying ion channels, peptide pores, and ionophores. However, a careful literature review reveals that simultaneous fluorescenc ...

Liquid-liquid microfluidic systems rely on the intricate control over the fluid properties of either miscible or immiscible mixtures. Herein, we report on the use of partially miscible binary liquid mixtures that lend their microfluidic properties from a h ...

Amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) is one of the most promising enabling formulations featuring significant water solubility and bioavailability enhancements for biopharmaceutical classification system (BCS) class II and IV drugs. An accurate thermodynamic u ...

Double emulsions, such as water-in-oil-in-water droplets, are important material platforms for conducting fundamental research and for technological applications. To date, well-defined double-emulsion droplets consisting of a single water core and a thin o ...

Ionically crosslinked hydrogels containing metal coordination motifs have piqued the interest of researchers in recent decades due to their self-healing and adhesive properties. In particular, catechol-functionalized bulk hydrogels have received a lot of a ...

Rapid advances in biomedical applications and soft robotics demand load-bearing soft materials that can be processed into complex 3D shapes. Direct ink writing (DIW) enables the fabrication of customizable shapes with locally varying compositions. Hydrogel ...

In this work, we provide a comparison between the stability and the interfacial structure of micrometer-sized and nanometer-sized droplets by employing a multi-instrumental approach comprised of the surface-sensitive technique of sum frequency scattering a ...

Many soft natural tissues display a fascinating set of mechanical properties that remains unmatched by manmade counterparts. These unprecedented mechanical properties are achieved through an intricate interplay between the structure and locally varying the ...

Amorphous nanoparticles (a-NPs) have physicochemical properties distinctly different from those of the corresponding bulk crystals; for example, their solubility is much higher. However, many materials have a high propensity to crystallize and are difficul ...
