In the frame of the conceptual design studies for the Toroidal Field (TF) coils of DEMO, a solution based on a layer-wound magnet, rectangular-shaped Cable-in-Conduit conductors and W&R manufacturing approach, is being developed. The feasibility and perfor ...

In addition to a reduced number of feeders, which would simplify their integration in the cryostat of the tokamak, the present study considers the possibility to reduce the voltage during safety discharge of the toroidal field (TF) coils. A lowered dischar ...

State-of-the-art high field solenoids make use of hybrid designs exploiting the superior high field performance of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) in the innermost region. The benefits of a hybrid Central Solenoid in a pulsed tokamak like the EU DEM ...

Following the conceptual design, the engineering design of the dc magnet and cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) for the Super-X test facility has been done in 2021. Totally three types of conductors with different structures were designed for the three pair ...

In 2013, the Swiss Plasma Center proposed a Toroidal Field (TF) layout for the DEMO-EUROfusion tokamak, based on a graded winding made of layers of Nb3Sn (react&wind) and NbTi conductors. The R&D effort led in 2015 to a full size prototype conductor tested ...

With the first tokamak designed for full nuclear operation now well into final assembly (ITER), and a major new research tokamak starting commissioning (JT60SA), nuclear fusion is becoming a mainstream potential energy source for the future. A critical par ...

The dimensioning of Winding Packs and allocation of materials in DEMO PF coils is proposed based on the requirements defined by the EUROfusion 2018 DEMO baseline. The coils are pancake-wound and use two types of forced flow cable-in-conduit conductors. The ...

A hybrid design of the Central Solenoid is under study within the conceptual design phase of the European DEMO fusion reactor. It is based on HTS conductors in the innermost high-field layers, and Nb3Sn and NbTi conductors for field values below 15 T. Sinc ...

The quench protection system of the nonplanar coils of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator was laid out over 15 years ago. At that time, the assessment of the hot-spot temperature by a basic adiabatic model was done using design values for material and operati ...

The EUROfusion DEMO machine is at its pre-conceptual stage. The design of the magnet system for this machine is being developed in collaboration with several European research centers. The Poloidal Field (PF) coils proposed by the Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) ...

A Nb3Sn based, React&Wind flat cable, named RW2, was developed in the past three years at the Swiss Plasma Center in the scope of the EUROfusion conceptual studies for DEMO. The test results presented earlier proved an excellent DC performance, but large e ...

A 45-T hybrid magnet is being built at the High Field Magnet Laboratory of the Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. The hybrid magnet consists of a 12-T cable-in- conduit-conductor (CICC) Nb 3Sn superconducting outsert and a 33-T resistive inse ...

In the last few years, the critical temperature (Tc) of several ITER cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) was determined by magnetization measurements at zero current. The distribution of the critical temperatures (Tc), caused by variation of strain in the N ...
