High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) are very promising materials for possible application in future fusion magnets, with significant R&D progress on HTS conductors in recent years. However, since geometric and thermo-physical characteristics of HTS and ...

We report the results of an exploratory design study for Nitronic 50 (N50) Toroidal Field (TF) coils for the EU-DEMO fusion power plant. N50 is a super-austenitic steel that has a yield stress (𝝈 𝒚) of up to 1500 MPa at 4 K, 50% higher than the conventiona ...

For the EU DEMO conductor testing, a temperature sensor based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optical fiber is studied at the EPFL Swiss Plasma Center. The SULTAN test facility has been upgraded to use fiber optic sensor for temperature monitoring and quench ...

Direct current tests performed in the past on the conductor samples of the toroidal field (TF) ITER coils revealed degradation of current sharing temperature, T-cs. The degradation progresses with repetitive electromagnetic loading, and also with thermal c ...

AC loss in the Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) usually decreases after the conductor undergoes electromagnetic cycling. This can be attributed to the increase of inter-strand resistance due to the detachment of the strand-bonding during cyclic loa ...

The design of the superconducting magnet system of the EU-DEMO tokamak reached the end of the preconceptual design phase, and a careful investigation of the parasitic heat load from the room-temperature environment is needed. A possible route for the paras ...

In the framework of EU design activities for dimensioning the future fusion DEMOnstration reactor (DEMO), extensive analyses were conducted in EUROfusion context, aiming at ultimately defining the design of the DEMO magnets system. In this objective CEA (C ...

The design of small solenoids without/with-partial insulation (PI) among turns or layers has been proven to grant higher thermal stability than for standard insulated cases. This technology also implies higher safety standards, by e.g. reducing the coil vo ...

The poloidal field (PF) magnet system of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility consists of 6 superconducting coils with full top-down symmetry, realized in Nb3Sn (PF1 and PF6) and NbTi (PF2, PF3, PF4 and PF5). To validate the NbTi PF coil design, short ...

The upgraded magnet assembly of the EDIPO test facility aims at generating 15 T at 4.2 K and 85% of short sample limit in a large rectangular aperture and over a uniform field length of 1000 mm. During 2020 the design studies have concentrated on two flare ...

Seven different high current conductors for fusion applications, made of High Temperature Superconducting stacked tapes, have been successfully tested in the Quench Experiment campaign supported by EUROfusion and carried out in SULTAN. The aim of this exte ...

The engineering design of the CFETR TF prototype coil and conductors has been completed. The wind-package (WP) of the coil is graded into three regions based on the magnetic field distribution for saving cost. High-Jc Nb3Sn strand, ITER-like Nb3Sn strand a ...

The react-and-wind technique for manufacturing of large Nb3Sn fusion magnets (RW) is very attractive because of the superior performance of the Nb3Sn with lower thermal strain compared to the wind-and-react technique. The procedure for magnet winding is al ...

A Nb3Sn based, React&Wind flat cable, named RW2, was developed in the past three years at the Swiss Plasma Center in the scope of the EUROfusion conceptual studies for DEMO. The test results presented earlier proved an excellent DC performance, but large e ...

A major upgrade of the European DIPOle (EDIPO) test facility, which will allow the testing of superconducting samples both for fusion and for high-energy physics applications, is taking place at the Swiss Plasma Center. With a target background field of 15 ...

The integration of the feeder system in a tokamak involves complex engineering, manufacturing and logistics issues. Therefore, within the pre-conceptual design activities of the European DEMO fusion reactor, it is important to provide a preliminary sizing ...

The superconducting magnet system of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility, composed of 18 toroidal field (TF) coils, 6 poloidal field coils and a central solenoid, has been designed and many procurements have been launched. Some manufacturing aspects a ...

The SULTAN test facility has been pivotal in qualifying forced-flow conductors in the last three decades. However, the rising demand for conductors for high-field magnets calls for a test facility able to provide a background magnetic field beyond the 11 T ...

Three alternative designs of the toroidal field (TF) coil were proposed for the European DEMO being developed under the Eurofusion Consortium. The most ambitious TF coil winding pack in terms of technological deviation from the ITER TF coil design and cons ...
