Stoichiometric silicon nitride (Si3N4) is one of the most mature integrated photonic platforms for linear and nonlinear optical applications on-chip. However, because it is a centrosymmetric material, second-order nonlinear processes are inherently not ava ...

Most present-day resonant systems, throughout physics and engineering, are characterized by a strict time-reversal symmetry between the rates of energy coupled in and out of the system, which leads to a trade-off between how long a wave can be stored in th ...

Second-harmonic generation allows for coherently bridging distant regions of the optical spectrum, with applications ranging from laser technology to self-referencing of frequency combs. However, accessing the nonlinear response of a medium typically requi ...

The coherent photogalvanic effect leads to the generation of a current under the absorption interference of coherent beams and allows for the inscription of space-charge gratings leading to a second-order susceptibility (chi((2))). The inscribed grating au ...

Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) nanophotonic devices with zero permittivity are known to exhibit adiabatic frequency translation via temporal refraction under extracavity excitation by intense light sources, which are however hard to integrate on-chip owing to a h ...

Frequency conversion in nonlinear materials is an extremely useful solution to the generation of new optical frequencies. Often, it is the only viable solution to realize light sources highly relevant for applications in science and industry. In particular ...

Stoichiometric silicon nitride is a highly regarded platform for its favorable attributes, such as low propagation loss and compatibility with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology, making it a prominent choice for various linear and nonlinear ...

The availability of nonlinear parametric processes, such as frequency conversion in photonic integrated circuits is essential. In this contribution, we demonstrate a highly tunable second-harmonic generation in a fully complementary metal–oxide–semiconduct ...

The Talbot self-imaging effect is mostly present in the forms of space or time, or in the frequency domain by the Fourier duality. Here, we disclose a new spectral Talbot effect arising in optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. The effect occurs in ...

Establishing relations between fundamental effects in far-flung areas of physics is a subject of great interest in the current research. Realization of a novel photonic system akin to the radio-frequency superconducting quantum interference device (RF-SQUI ...

Sinc-shaped Nyquist pulses possess a rectangular spectrum, enabling data to be encoded in a minimum spectral bandwidth and satisfying by essence the Nyquist criterion of zero inter-symbol interference (ISI). This property makes them very attractive for com ...

Difference-frequency generation (DFG) is elemental for nonlinear parametric processes such as optical parametric oscillation and is instrumental for generating coherent light at long wavelengths, especially in the middle infrared. Second-order nonlinear fr ...

Sinc-shaped Nyquist-pulses possess a rectangular spectrum. Thus, a sinc-pulse transmission minimizes the carrier spacing down to the baud rate, and therefore, substantially increases the transmissible data rates. These perspectives have led to a strong res ...

Electro-optic (EO) modulation is a key functionality to have on-chip. However, achieving a notable linear EO effect in stoichiometric silicon nitride has been a persistent challenge due to the material's intrinsic properties. Recent advancements revealed t ...

An unidirectional short-wave infrared fiber laser, comprising a theta cavity, with a gain unit based on rare-earth cations-doped fiber, the theta cavity having a ring cavity with two additional 2 input ports×2 output ports directional couplers DC1 and DC2 ...

We report an all-fiber pulsed source based on parametric conversion followed by thulium amplification able to deliver picosecond pulses at a repetition rate selectable between 2 and 5 GHz, of which central wavelength can be freely selected in the 2 micron ...

Achieving the regime of single-photon nonlinearities in photonic devices by just exploiting the intrinsic high-order susceptibilities of conventional materials would open the door to practical semiconductor-based quantum photonic technologies. Here we show ...

We present the experimental demonstration of broadband four-wave mixing in a 2.5 cm-long segment of AsSe Chalcogenide microstructured fiber. The parametric mixing was driven by a continuous-wave pump compatible with data signal wavelength conversion. Four- ...

Broadband continuous-wave parametric gain and efficient wavelength conversion is an important functionality to bring on-chip. Recently, meter-long silicon nitride waveguides have been utilized to obtain continuous-traveling-wave parametric gain, establishi ...

Applications such as optical clocks, gas spectroscopy, and optical coherent tomography stand to benefit significantly from the integration of on-chip supercontinuum sources. Materials exhibiting both second- and third-order nonlinearities are particularly ...
