We elucidate the mechanism of a newly observed photovoltaic effect which occurs in ferroelectrics with periodic domain structures. Under sufficiently strong illumination, domain walls function as nanoscale generators of the photovoltaic current. The steps ...

Fluorescence microscopy has tackled many of the burning questions in cellular biology. Probing low-affinity cellular interactions remains one of the major challenges in the field to better understand cellular signaling. We introduce a novel approach the na ...

Semiconductor nanowire arrays are reproducible and rational platforms for the realization of high performing designs of light emitting diodes and photovoltaic devices. In this paper we present an overview of the growth challenges of III-V nanowire arrays o ...

Nanowire-based solar cells opened a new avenue for increasing conversion efficiency and rationalizing material use by growing different III-V materials on silicon substrates. Here, we propose a multiterminal nanowire solar cell design with a theoretical co ...

Surface recombination represents a handicap for high-efficiency solar cells. This is especially important for nanowire array solar cells, where the surface-to-volume ratio is greatly enhanced. Here, the effect of different passivation materials on the effe ...

The resistivity and mobility of carbon-doped GaAs nanowires have been studied for different doping concentrations. Surface effects have been evaluated by comparing unpassivated with passivated nanowires. We directly see the influence of the surface: the pi ...

We report on the use of photonic resonances in Raman spectroscopy on single nanowires for the enhancement of forbidden modes and the study of the interaction of phonons with free-carriers. This is achieved by suspending nanowire over a trench and detecting ...

We report the direct observation of nanoscale photovoltaic current-voltage properties associated with directional steps of the electrostatic potential at 109 degrees domain walls in ferroelectric BiFeO3 thin films with highly ordered ferroelectric stripe d ...

Semiconductor nanowires are promising building blocks for next generation photonics. Indirect proofs of large absorption cross sections have been reported in nanostructures with subwavelength diameters, an effect that is even more prominent in vertically s ...

Physical properties of surfaces are extremely important for initiation and nucleation of crystal growth, including nanowires. In recent years, fluctuations in surface characteristics have often been related to unreproducible growth of GaAs nanowires on Si ...

The photonic properties of nanowires advocate for their utilization in next generation solar cells. Compared to traditional devices, the electric scheme is transformed from a single into an ensemble of pn junctions connected in parallel. This new configura ...

High aspect ratio nanostructures have gained increasing interest as highly sensitive platforms for biosensing. Here, well-defined biofunctionalized vertical indium arsenide nanowires are used to map the interaction of light with nanowires depending on thei ...

PN junction rectification is demonstrated in indium nitride. The junction is formed between the n-type surface accumulation layer and the Mg-doped, p-type bulk in a top-contacted thin film structure. The parasitic shorting path between the top contacts is ...

Semiconductor nanowires are promising building blocks for next generation solar energy conversion at low cost, due to their large absorption cross-sections. Here, the understanding of their absorption power is explored via computational and experimental me ...

Organized growth of high aspect-ratio nanostructures such as membranes is interesting for opto-electronic and energy harvesting applications. Recently, we reported a new form of InAs nano-membranes grown on Si substrates with enhanced light scattering prop ...

BiVO4 thin film photoanodes were grown by vapor transport chemical deposition on FTO/glass substrates. By controlling the flow rate, the temperatures of the Bi and V sources (Bi metal and V2O5 powder, respectively), and the temperature of the deposition zo ...

Due to its non-destructive and its micro-spatial resolution, Raman spectroscopy is a powerful tool for a rapid structural and compositional characterization of nanoscale materials. Here, by combining the compositional dependence of the Raman peaks with the ...

importance for semiconductor nanowires because of the high surface-to-volume ratio and only little is known about the consequences of oxidation for these systems. Here, we study the properties of indium arsenide nanowires which were locally oxidized using ...

The growth of compound semiconductor nanowires on the silicon platform has opened many new perspectives in the area of electronics, optoelectronics and photovoltaics. We have grown a 1 x 1 mm(2) array of InAs nanowires on p-type silicon for the fabrication ...

Thanks to their wide band structure tunability, GaAs1-xSbx nanowires provide exciting perspectives in optoelectronic and energy harvesting applications. The control of composition and strain of these ternary alloys is crucial in the determination of their ...
