Solid-liquid interfaces play a fundamental role in surface electrochemistry(1), catalysis(2), wetting(3), self-assembly(4) and biomolecular functions(5). The interfacial energy determines many of the properties of such interfaces, including the arrangement ...

Nanoparticles (NPs) are gaining increasing attention for potential application in medicine; consequently, studying their interaction with cells is of central importance. We found that both ligand arrangement and composition on gold nanoparticles play a cru ...

Monolayer-protected metal nanoparticles (NPs) are not only promising materials with a wide range of potential industrial and biological applications, but they are also a powerful tool to investigate the behaviour of matter at nanoscopic scales, including t ...

Cell-free systems are powerful tools in synthetic biology with versatile and wide-ranging applications. However, a significant bottleneck for these systems, particularly the PURE cell-free system, is their limited reaction lifespan and yield. Dialysis offe ...

Heparin has been known to be a broad-spectrum inhibitor of viral infection for almost 70 years, and it has been used as a medication for almost 90 years due to its anticoagulant effect. This nontoxic biocompatible polymer efficiently binds to many types of ...

Respiratory viruses can cause severe infections, often leading to hospitalization or death, and pose a major pandemic threat. No broad-spectrum antiviral is currently available. However, most respiratory viruses use sialic acid or heparan sulfates as attac ...

We present a methodology for building biologically inspired, soft microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. Our strategy combines several advanced techniques including programmable colloidal self-assembly, light-harvesting with plasmonic nanotransduce ...

Viral infections caused by bacteriophages, i.e., viruses that kill bacteria are one of the most dangerous and common threats for bacteria-based bioreactors. More than 70% of biotechnology companies have admitted to encountering this problem. Despite phage ...

Silver nanoparticles constitute a very promising approach for the development of new antimicrobial systems. Nanoparticulate objects can bring significant improvements in the antibacterial activity of this element, through specific effect such as an adsorpt ...

Collagen-rich tissues in the cornea exhibit unique and highly organized extracellular matrix ultrastructures, which contribute to its high load-bearing capacity and light transmittance. Corneal collagen fibrils are controlled during development by small le ...

The arrangement of nanoscale building blocks into patternswithmicroscale periodicity is challenging to achieve via self-assemblyprocesses. Here, we report on the phase-transition-driven collectiveassembly of gold nanoparticles in a thermotropic liquid crys ...

Coronaviruses represent global health threat. In this century, they have already caused two epidemics and one serious pandemic. Although, at present, there are no approved drugs and therapies for the treatment and prevention of human coronaviruses, several ...

Influenza viruses are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. These air-borne pathogens are able to cross the species barrier, leading to regular seasonal epidemics and sporadic pandemics. Influenza viruses also possess a high genetic variabi ...

Nanoparticles (NPs) in the biological environment are exposed to a large variety and concentration of proteins. Proteins are known to adsorb in a 'corona' like structure on the surface of NPs. In this study, we focus on the effects of surface compositional ...

Adherent cells respond to a wide range of substrate cues, including chemistry, topography, hydrophobicity, and surface energy. The cell-substrate interface is therefore an important design parameter in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering applicati ...

Disclosed herein are peptide-grafted compounds that irreversibly deactivate bacteriophages or influenza virus depending on the peptide and remain safe for bacteria and mammalian cells. The active compounds comprise a core (cyclodextrin or gold nanoparticle ...

Protein-based nanoparticles offer tailored bioactivity and biodegradability that are distinct from their synthetic polymeric counterparts. Precise engineering of physical properties, especially size, of nanoparticles using electrohydrodynamic (EHD) jetting ...

Widespread use of petrochemicals often leads to accidental releases in aquatic environments, occasionally with disastrous results. We have developed a hydrophobic and oleophilic mesh that separates oil from water continuously in situ via capillary action, ...

Gold nanoparticles owe a large number of their properties to their ligand shell. Indeed, many researchers routinely use mixtures of ligand molecules for their nanoparticles to impart complex property sets. It has been shown that the morphology of ligand sh ...

When a binary mixture of ligand molecules is used to coat gold nanoparticles, stripe-like domains can occur. These nanodomains confer nanoparticles unique structure-dependent properties. The domain structure has been characterized primarily using scanning ...
