We report on advanced 3D direct imaging of light fields emerging from a photonic nanojet. We used an interference microscope that allows observation of amplitude and phase at the highest resolution. For the first time cross polarization interferometry is u ...

We report on the light confinement effect observed in non-ideally shaped (i.e., non-spherical) nanoscale solid immersion lenses (SILs). To investigate this effect, nanostructures of various shapes are fabricated by electron-beam lithography. When completel ...

We revisit the scaling laws in micro-optical systems to highlight new phenomena arising beyond a conventional optical regime, especially when the size of the system approaches to the operational wavelength. Our goal is to visualize the impact of the scalin ...

Miniaturized optical systems show often unconventional responses compare to larger systems of the same design. We investigate such new phenomena using microlenses, and demonstrate characteristics beyond the refraction limit of the micro-optical systems. ...

Certain high power laser applications require thin homogeneous laser lines. In this paper we describe the concept, fabrication and characterization of a 1-D diffuser that generates such a line. The device is based on an array of concave cylinder lenses wit ...

We present a different type of electromagnetic surface wave than a surface plasmon polariton (SPP), called Bloch surface wave (BSW). BSWs are sustained by dielectric multilayers, and therefore they do not suffer from dissipation. Their propagation length i ...

Strong nonlinear, electro-optical, and thermo-optical properties of lithium niobate (LN) have gained much attention. However, the implementation of LiNbO3 in real devices is not a trivial task due to difficulties in manufacturing and handling thin-film LN. ...

Photonic Nanojets are highly localized wave fields emerging directly behind dielectric microspheres; if suitably illuminated. In this contribution we reveal how different illumination conditions can be used to engineer the photonic Nanojets by measuring th ...

The production cross section of a top quark pair in association with a photon is measured in proton-proton collisions in the decay channel with two oppositely charged leptons (e(+/-)mu(-/+), e(+)e(-), or mu(+)mu(-)). The measurement is performed using 138 ...

We present a hybrid surface wave device, which combines Bloch surface wave (BSW) and plasmonic nanoantennas. BSWs offer in-plane dark-field illumination. Nanoantennas squeeze the incidence into nano-size and enable far-field readout without near-field tech ...

Shaping of light fields behind amplitude and phase masks the basis the lithographic structure reproduction. The aerial image or better the intensity distribution defines the resolution of the structure to be printed. Contrast is the main parameter and to a ...

We try to find out the details of how light fields behind the structures of photomasks develop in order to determine the best conditions and designs for proximity printing. The parameters that we use approach real situations like structure printing at prox ...

In this work we demonstrate the advantages of investigating diffractive optical elements in the phase domain. In this regime we can detect features that are not restrained by the diffraction limit and relate them to the geometrical and optical properties o ...

We experimentally demonstrate critical coupling of whispering gallery mode (WGM) disk resonators implemented on a Bloch surface wave platform using scanning near-field optical microscopy. The studied structure is a 60 nm thick TiO 2 TiO2 WGM disk cavity (r ...

Bloch surface waves (BSWs) are recently developing alternative to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Due to dramatically enhanced propagation distance and strong field confinement these surface states can be successfully used in on-chip all-optical integra ...

We investigate nondiffracting surface waves. On top of the Bloch surface wave platform, a 60-nm-thick TiO2 isosceles triangle serves as a 2D axicon. Scanning near-field microscopy measurements verify nondiffracting surface beam properties. ...

Highly confined light fields demonstrate peculiar phase features, e.g., Gouy phase anomaly. Longitudinal-differential phase measurements by a high-resolution interference microscope are applied to investigate phase evolutions of confined light fields for p ...

High resolution amplitude and phase of light fields emerging from a 2-μm-period amplitude grating are measured for different wavelengths. The amplitude gratings lead to highly periodic patterns caused by the Talbot effect. Such patterns reach periodicities ...

We investigate the Gouy phase anomaly of light in the focus of refractive plano-convex microlens arrays by using longitudinal-differential (LD) interferometry and a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. We put emphasis on determining the amount ...
