In order to be economically competitive with simple "brute force" (i.e., PV + electrolyzer) strategies or the production of promising solar fuels, like H-2, from fossil fuels, a practical photoelectrochemical device must optimize cost, longevity, and perfo ...

We present a strategy to produce porous NiTiO3/TiO2 nanostructures with excellent photocatalytic activity toward hydrogen generation. In a first step, nickel-doped TiO2 needle bundles were synthesized by a hydrothermal procedure. Through the sintering in a ...

The electrochemical behavior of alpha-Fe2O3 photoelectrodes prepared by spray pyrolysis with different thicknesses was examined under dark and illumination conditions. The main charge transport phenomena occurring in the PEC cell photoelectrodes were chara ...

Metal sulfide (PbS and CdS) quantum dots (QDs) were prepared over mesoporous TiO2 films by improved successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) processes. The as-prepared QD-sensitized electrodes were combined with a cobalt complex redox couple ...

We present a new, easily scalable method for the deposition of nanocrystalline hematite photoelectrodes based on the spin-coating of a mixed solution containing tin(II) and iron(III) chlorides followed by thermal treatment. Our facile approach does not req ...

Understanding and optimizing the effects of edge states and nanoflake dimensions on the photon harvesting efficiency in ultrathin transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductor photoelectrodes is critical to assessing their practical viability for sol ...

To achieve a sustainable society with an energy mix primarily based on solar energy, we need methods of storing energy from sunlight as chemical fuels. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices offer the promise of solar fuel production through artificial photosy ...

Organic semiconductors hold promise to enable scalable, low-cost and high-performance artificial photosynthesis. However, the performance of systems based on organic semiconductors for light-driven water oxidation have remained poor compared with inorganic ...

Revved-up rust! Light-induced water splitting over iron oxide (hematite) has been achieved by using a particle-assisted deposition technique and IrO2-based surface catalysis. Photocurrents in excess of 3 mA cm-2 were obtained at +1.23 V versus the reversib ...

Templating nanocrystals into mesoporous electrodes using an organic porogen typically requires thermal oxidation at >400 degrees C to completely remove the organic material and afford good electronic properties. These oxidation conditions are incompatible ...

The state-of-the-art performance, obtained through the reduction of precursor gas residence time in hematite photoanodes produced by APCVD, is explained in this report by an enhanced preferential orientation of the highly conductive crystal planes perpendi ...

Visible light active photoelectrodes for hydrogen generation by solar photoelectrochemical water splitting have been under scrutiny for many decades. In particular, the role of electron holes and charge transfer remains controversial. We have investigated ...

Compositional engineering of a mixed cation/mixed halide perovskite in the form of (FAP-bI(3))(0.85)(MAPbBr(3))(0.15) is one of the most effective strategies to obtain record-efficiency perovskite solar cells. However, the perovskite self-organization upon ...

Exfoliated transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanomaterials possess remarkable and tunable semiconducting properties which make them competitive for use in ultrathin, flexible devices such as photodetectors, sensors, and photoelectrodes for solar energy ...

Through examination of the optoelectronic and photoelectrochemical properties of BiVO4 and Cu2O photoelectrodes, we evaluate the feasibility of a BiVO4/Cu2O photoanode/photocathode tandem cell for overall unassisted solar water splitting. Using state-of-th ...

Thienoacenes and furoacenes are among the most frequent molecular units found in organic materials. The efficient synthesis of morphologically different heteroacenes and the rapid determination of their solid-state and electronic properties are still chall ...

We demonstrate the use of the derivative voltammogram method to predict the selectivity of the photo-driven oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) on a WO3 photoanode as a function of applied potential using only information obtained from the linear sw ...

Tunable ambipolar photoelectrochemical behavior emerges from microdomains of nanostructured p-type CuFeO2 and n-type Fe2O3 that arise from a single facile solution-processed thin fi lm. The switchable operation of this system is controlled by chemical, opt ...
