Plasma turbulence in a simple magnetized torus (SMT) is explored for the first time with three-dimensional global fluid simulations. Three turbulence regimes are described: an ideal interchange mode regime, a previously undiscovered resistive interchange m ...

The collisional damping of seeded E X B zonal flows on the ion Larmor radius scale is studied using a gyrokinetic model. The focus is on flow damping due to finite Larmor radius effects, which cause a nu(parallel to)/nu anisotropy of the ion distribution f ...

The mechanisms for anomalous transport across the magnetic field are investigated in a toroidal magnetized plasma. The role of plasma instabilities and macroscopic density structures (blobs) is discussed. Examples from a scenario with open magnetic field l ...

The methodology for plasma-turbulence code validation is discussed, with focus on the quantities to use for the simulation-experiment comparison, i.e., the validation observables, and application to the TORPEX basic plasma physics experiment [A. Fasoli , P ...

The radial propagation of plasma blobs and possibilities of influencing it are investigated in the TORPEX toroidal experiment [Fasoli et al., Phys. Plasmas 13, 055902 (2006)]. The effect of changing the connection length and the neutral background pressure ...

Fluid models used to study the edge plasma region need to be benchmarked against similar conditions given that models can strongly differ in complexity and therefore the results they produce. Via this validation study undertaken through the framework of EU ...

Bridging the gap between plasma physics and other scientific domains, in particular, the computational fluid dynamics community, a general, rigorous, and simple-to-apply methodology is presented for both the verification of the correct implementation of th ...

Fractional Levy motion has been derived from its generalized Langevin equation via path integrals in earlier works and has since proven to be a useful model for nonlocal and non-Markovian processes, especially in the context of nondiffusive transport. Here ...

We designed and built a diagnostic based on a cathodoluminescent screen for the detection of turbulent plasma structures with high spatial resolution. The screen is coated with a low threshold energy cathodoluminescent powder that emits light when exposed ...

A model for the simulation of the tokamak boundary is described, which is mass-conserving to leading order in rho s / R 0 (where rho s is the ion sound Larmor radius and R-0 is the tokamak major radius at the magnetic axis). The model integrates a three-di ...

Plasma turbulence in a linear device is explored for the first time with three-dimensional global twofluid simulations, focusing on the plasma parameters of the Large Plasma Device. Three instabilities are present in the simulations: the Kelvin-Helmholtz i ...

Intermittent cross-field particle transport events (ITEs) are studied in the basic toroidal device TORPEX [TORoidal Plasma EXperiment, A. Fasoli et al., Phys. Plasmas 13, 055902 (2006)], with focus on the role of the density gradient. ITEs are due to the i ...

We present an acceleration method for sequences of large-scale linear systems, such as the ones arising from the numerical solution of time-dependent partial differential equations coupled with algebraic constraints. We discuss different approaches to leve ...

A methodology for plasma turbulence code validation is discussed, focusing on quantitative assessment of the agreement between experiments and simulations. The present work extends the analysis carried out in a previous paper [P. Ricci et al., Phys. Plasma ...

The link between toroidal flows and density blobs is experimentally demonstrated in TORPEX simple magnetized plasmas: momentum is transferred from an ideal-interchange mode to density blobs. The phase shift between the toroidal flow and the density perturb ...
